I have taken on a rescue dog who I was advised had been castrated but a testicle hadn't descended . The operation went well but had a lot of swelling and that went down and all is well.

Took him to my own vet and she asked if the testicle presumably in the abdomen had been removed as it is a cancer risk if left . She couldn't feel anything in the scrotal sac.

I asked the rescue who spoke to the original vet and came back and said the testicle wasn't descended . I know that but specifically want to hear there's no abdominal testicle inside him. Rescue said they'd ring vets back and ' hope they don't get upset with me ' I haven't heard anything but got sent vet notes on the dog that say ' castration - abdo teste retain ?

Does that mean this is what they found and it's gone or does this mean what's left inside him. Rescue say no vet ever would leave an abdo testes as it's negligent because it's known to increase the risk of cancer, they also say if original owner was advised of risk in leaving it and declined to have it removed the vets notes would say that incase a complaint was ever raised .

I just want to hear that my dog does not have a testicle in his abdomen . Any thoughts . I could ring original vet myself but not sure it's ethical or they'd speak to me and rescue think I'm fussing unnecessarily.

It sounds as though no one is sure whether it's still there or not... Surely the vet note should say abdo testicle removed?

Have you got a scan of the relevant notes you're happy to share, having removed any personal info? There's normally a surcharge applied for an abdo castrate and I wonder if you can tell this from the wording. I also don't believe any vet would ever remove one testicle and leave an abdominal one in.

They don’t say but the bottom list looks like the pricing. Does he have an abdominal scar...? Likely beside his penis or along his midline. The only way to know for sure if to ask for clarification from the vet, an abdominal scan or a blood test.

I would give the note to your own vet and ask them to ring the treating vet, whose contact details are presumably on the record. They can then have a professional conversation, if your vet can't work it out from the notes.

I've also found reference to this in an aftercare note. What is cryptorchid ?

Cryptorchid castration was performed.

Cryptochidism is where one or both testes are not descended. My Daxi had only one decended and both were removed at his castration. My understanding from those notes would be that both were successfully removed. ETA you got there before me!

Thankyou everyone , I was worried because my own vet said the second abdo testicle might not be removed if the owner wouldn't pay the additional costs so if the notes didn't confirm it I would have had to put him under a GA to get the job done and I've only recently homed him . I'm so pleased he doesn't face a surgery and we can get on with bonding x

I’m certainly not a vet but the notes read to me that: castrate, one in scrotum and castrate, one abdominal. I do however stand to be corrected:)

I was going to add, my horse had this. His notes said one testicle removed in standard castrate, one testicle removed by laproscopic procedure.

I see you've got an answer though
