Remy is going nicely at Novice (good rhythm, not struggling with the work etc) but would like to just shave a few TPs off our XC and get our speed a bit more "neat" so have been working on increasing his fitness to help as being a WB he can struggle a little on speed.
I got hold of a copy of Ginny Leng's book on training the event horse which is great and has some useful info. Her suggestion was to have a Novice Eventer building up to 3 x 5 minute gallop intervals with a 3 minute walk in between each. However, I've seen elsewhere that 2 x 5 minute gallops should be enough for a Novice level eventer. Is this because back in Ginny's day it would be a long format event?? Just wondering what others do/would recommend?
Remy is happily doing 2 x 5 minute gallops so thinking about switching to build up to 3 x 5 minutes (so 5-5-3; 5-5-4; 5-5-5).
Other fitness suggestions very welcome! For info the rest of his routine is 6 days work per week including SJ 1-2 times per week, flatwork 1-2 times per week, hacking other days. Plus XC schooling every few weeks (if not eventing).
