Interview with Mike Farrell 'Should I give my dog Librela?'

I have not looked properly but have chosen not to give my newly arthritic lurcher Librela. We opted for a traditional NSAID instead.

I have read a lot of concerning owner accounts online and didnt feel it worth the risk.

I may consider it as a last chance drug further down the line.

It made a huge difference to my last greyhound at first. Then he started getting mopey for a day after but good for the rest of the month. However the effects were getting worse with every injection so we called it a day and had him pts instead of librella on his final visit, after a disagreement with the young vet who said that he had a lot of life left in him. Asked to see an older vet who knew us from the farm side of things and he said that we were doing the right thing by the dog.
 
I am aware of some of the problems with it but Moti has been on it for over a year and he is so much more comfortable. He is a walking vet bill anyway but I haven't noticed anything new in the way of effects. NSAIDs tend to make him sick and he doesn't seem to respond to them especially well in terms of improved comfort/mobility. I will continue with it and PTS when he is no longer comfortable (he is 8 now) but I knew when we took him on he was unlikely to make old bones. He has had one major operation at the age of 2 and I will not put him through another as he does not cope with cage rest or with vet interventions. I suspect like all these things there's good and bad. The bad is dreadful and the good for us is pretty darn good.
 
I've had no reactions or issues with clients using it all. Have had some with no response and one dog who developed IVDD but as a breed predisposed (Large Daxie) ortho consult didn't think Librela played a part.
 
My attention span didn’t make it past the first 5 minutes where nothing was said. 🙈. Shameful I know. I saw that he said he would use it so I assume it’s not that bad, just not a cure all?
 
So, assuming I’ve got it right, Librela inhibits COX-2 (cycloxygenase, part of the arachidonic acid pathway) thus dampening the excessive inflammatory response? Which is really interesting as it’s the same mechanism for green lipped mussel (component of some arthritis supplements). Hmm, I might review my attitude to Librela so thank you!

Have you tried Antinol ? I'm feeding it at the moment.

I like it, she was on Riaflex as well, but I've reduced that. Much more playful, she is 11, nearly 12. I've heard good and bad re Librella, so don't want to try unless I have to.

I have the same mixed feelings regarding Librella, at 14 (him, not me! ;)) I feel the current mix of meds ensures a pretty good quality of life, which I'm a bit loathe to risk for a 'maybe'. Antinol could be a good extra, so thank you.
 
Not used it myself but three friends have used it for their dogs as very much a last attempt at making them comfortable, having used most of the other options. All three dogs benefited.
 
Antinol is great, IMO, the best joint supplement we currently have on the market.
It is very similar to Blackmores lyprinol , if you guys get that, which is much much cheaper..
 
My six yr old collie has been on it since she was three for OA in both front carpel joints and now lower hock joints. Changed her life.

I am on the fb page and some of the posts on there are interesting.

Its a new drug, not all dogs will react well, it has contraindications, and i suspect a lot of those with negative experiences their dogs have undiagnosied issues as well as the OA
