Intrauterine implant for hormonal mares .. Any experience?

I have spoken to my vet at length regarding treatment of my hormonal mare.
She has previously been on regumate which worked a treat and was covered on insurance, but the cover has ended so can't afford to go down that route.

He suggested inserting a intrauterine implant into her neck which will keep her out of season for 3 months, just wondering if anybody has had this done and what the average cost is.
 
Ask your vet about the human contraceptive injection, I think it's depraprovera? Much less invasive than an implant, and success stories for hormonal mares are good.

It isn't actually licensed for horses, but vets are allowed to administer it.

I think this was the one where I had to inject her twice a day for a week which really didn't appeal to me
 
Pig Regumate is cheaper and works just as well, one bottle lasted us all season. I'd imagine 3 monthly visits from the vet & injections would cost more and if they are the same as the human 'Depo injections' the length of effectiveness can vary.
I was a bit confused though as to whether when you said 'inter uterine' you were referring to the inter uterine marble.

It's so difficult as she comes into season all year round, had her ovaries scanned yesterday to make sure all is ok which it was thank god. I compete a lot but as she comes into season every 14 days its not worth taking her out when she's in season as she just won't perform obviously she's in a lot of pain so I don't want to push her.
 
My friends mare is by Ghareeb out of a Master Imp mare, I was surprised she did it too as the mare have eventing broodmare written all over her but she wouldn't take being ridden at all if she wasn't on regumate and even that was beginning to be less effective. Mares are a PITA!

I can't remember the cost, but it was less than Regumate! As we were competing FEI at the time we could not use Pig Regumate, which I was told was the same stuff in a different bottle, but not permitted. The marble worked well for a while, then seemed to stop working. I did not follow up to see if the marble had slipped, but as she was not fun to ride for me I sold her to someone more gutsy than me (with a full history)! Such a shame, she was a complete babe a lot of the time, but when she was fit for the bigger competitions combined with hormonal she was beyond my capabilities.

BTW, the new owners went on to have the ovaries removed after a year or so, but it is a very invasive procedure and sadly they lost the mare to complications.

Such a difficult situation when you have a wonderful horse and they are hormonal. I will now only have geldings. I do get on with mares, but if you are training so hard for a big competition and then the mare is "off" on the day it is so disappointing.

It is really disappointing when shes at her best, she goes to the extreme of she will fly around xc and sj courses one week, when shes in season i'll be lucky if i can get her over fence 1! even worse is that we have started doing a bit of eventing, when shes not in season shes great, when she is in season we smash through the showjumps, and usually get eliminated at fence 2 xc, eventing fees are so expensive I come away totally dishearted and lose a lot of money and its not even the mares fault :-(

I've tried Regumate and it really works but the cost is something like £65 a month and it was covered on the insurance for a year but now I would have to pay for it myself which I can't afford.
I previously had a mare and I never noticed if she was in season or not, thats probably due to the fact she used to crash through fences whether in season or not! lol
I would never have another mare the cost of keeping them on the road is awful.
