Well, after the sadness of my beloved mare dying of colic on Monday, my mum was left with a dilemma. We were told last week that the owner of the pony companion was going to sell up. We were offered her at a bargain price... so can you guess what happened?!

My mum couldn't face giving up after Maiden, and it seemed it was now or never so she agreed to give the pony a home. It may seem a bit soon to some, but it has already helped my mum to keep going after such trauma.

So here she is - introducing Puerto Rico (Pottie for short - and it suits her a lot!)

We don't know that much about her, really..! She's about 14.2hh, TB x NF at a guess (we'll see when she officially becomes part of the family on Saturday, when her current owner hands over her paperwork), has done all PC stuff and has had a couple of years off now. I'll be sitting on her once we get her tack, just to remind her that riding still happens, then I'll get her sorted in spring next year so we can hopefully find her a nice sharer to have fun with :)

I'll get some pics taken when I sit on (and hopefully not if I come off - I always swore I'd never get on her, seeing what she was like when she was in work (nuts) but she's calmed down a lot since... I hope...) and will hopefully be able to post updates on our progress next year. You never know, if she and I get on I may even take her to small parties, just because I've missed partying in the last five years! :)

So out of the sadness surrounding Maiden, and however hard it is to go up to the field and see her hoofprints in the ground and her bridle hung up in the tack room, some small positive has come out of the last week or so.

She's beautiful :) and very lucky to have fallen on her hooves with you. Congratulations and I hope she brings you and your mum lots of happy times to help heal the sadness of your loss a little xxx

She looks lovely and hopefully won't think she has to live up to her name anymore! I know how hard it is loosing a much loved horse and although you will never replace them or forget them, having another one to love will help you heal xxx

no one will ever replace maiden, but it has helped me no end to have other horses to tend to. I still miss my long lost horses, taken so tragically, but I can cope with the pain with the help of nuzzles and cuddles (and occasionally being galloped AT!)

(I have found that when they gallop at you, they will go round you rather than over you - if you can hold your nerve)

Pottie looks lovely - and tbh I like them with a bit of spirit and madness.

ok will never replace maiden but in time she will find a place in your hearts for simply being her - beautiful mare and to your mum " well done for seeing that whilst maiden as gone you can give same love and care to another" I wish with all my heart it works well and you all grow to love each other big big big hugs - lovely piccie and need more :) xxx love to you and your mum xxx

She is lovely. So sorry about Maiden, but hopefully your new little one will help focus you and help you get through it and you can think of all the good times with Maiden that you shared. Have fun with your new beautiful little pony :)

Her name most definitely is appropriate for her - I've known her for a number of years with her old owners and never liked her (I don't "do" TB types, or ponies!) but she's calmed down and grown on me since she moved house to be with us :)

I wish it were spring already  :p

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Good luck with the newbie. Having a pony around needing care and attention will certainly help with coming to terms with your loss; at least now you and your mum won't be left at a loose end with no horse to attend to. Sorry for your loss. But also congratulations on your gain.

i'm a great believer in fate and think sometimes horses find us, after i lost my TB i still had daughters pony to look after but after the initial grief i realised i missed having a big beasty to look after too, that same week i got offered my mare, her loaner couldn't keep her and neither could her owner have her back.
6 years later she's still here and although she'll never replace my old girl she has become special to me in her own way:)

So welcome to Pottie (fab name lol) she won't fill the hole left by maiden but she'll certainly make it seem smaller;)

Thanks for all the lovely comments :)

I wish I had the time and money to be able to be more involved with her - it's mostly my mum and brother now I'm in my own house and have a wedding to plan. But I do also have big orange pony Frank to ride (pics possibly to follow!) so at least I have something, and the possibility of taking Pottie out socialising if she's sane enough for me to cope with :) That's one thing I really missed when I had Maiden, that we could only hack and not have any lessons or go out to competitions because of her old tendon injury. So I'm looking forward to the occasional outing next year!

So sorry to hear about Maiden xx

Good to hear Pottie will have a new home with you though. She looks really sweet (but having a scatty TB myself I know looks can be deceiving ;) ) Good luck with her.
