baby clydesdale and i have been doing lots of lunging recently (by baby i mean 6 ) due to me having a sore back and having a wee confidence set back hacking out alone. Any way all has been going well but i was thinking about introducing some free lunging for a bit of variety make it a bit more fun and exciting don't want him getting bored. i have done lots of free lunging before with my old pony but never introduced it as a new thing so ....
what sort of size area do i start of with small i presume?
do i need to start with something easier till he gets the idea to start with he is very good already with voice commands?
is he likely to start hooning around like an idiot first time round?

sorry for all the questions berry sweets for all :D

have a go and find out! whats the worst that could happen? lol id advise not trying it in an outdoor arena incase he jumps out lol! and an arena rather than a field. dont chase him, be quiet with your commands until you realise he wont charge round like a loon. using jumps and grids can be fun too :)

also boots boots and more boots!!!!!

If you mean a round pen, definitely the best thing I've built here.

Seen them prefabricated from old pallets, even white tape. I had some s/h five foot posts (about 35 from memory) and my fencing contractor knocked them in for me for £100. I then screwed boards onto them at horse eye level and filled the gaps with white tape. Works brilliantly!

About 60ft diameter is reckoned to be the usual but maybe much smaller could be better for some training tasks.

Horses don't seem to want to try to go through or over the fence as they are convinced there will be a gate very soon if they walk on far enough! Don't horses tend to think in straight lines?
