Introducing kitten to older cat

Yes I’m getting a kitten... I’ve read lots of stuff including Jackson Galaxy and obviously I want to have the best chance of a good relationship. Older cat is a 5 yr old male. Kitten is male 9 weeks coming tomorrow.

How did you do it?

Make sure both have a safe place from the other to allow time out. Make them smell the same. Perfume on your hands and stroke both of them helps a lot. Oh and lots of pictures.

Akin to making them smell the same an old fashioned way was to butter paws of both cats so by the time they have licked it off themselves and each other they smell the same

I would neuter the kitten as early as the vet advises is safe, there is no doubt that neutering our kitten has change his relationship with our 8 year old male for the better. The older cat is a right wuss, but he seems to recognise that our new kitten is less masculine and less of a threat.

We had a real problem with a previous cat a few years back, he was very violent if approached by a new kitten. We ended up barricading a door way so that the kittens were kept in one room and he had the rest of the house. It took him many weeks, but eventually he jumped into the room for a second, then ten seconds, then a minute and eveything worked out fine. Feliway also seemed to help him.

Nads will be off as soon as possible. Have bought a Feliway Friends diffuser. I have a kitten room set up as a safe place especially when I’ve got to go out. I’ve always had two kittens together but this time it’s one and I hate the thought of him being alone.
