Today I figured out how to upload photos so here are a couple of pictures of my Highland pony Jasmin. She is 10 years old and has been on loan to me for the last year as a companion and best friend for my 7 year old nephew. She was not backed and has issues with fear and panicking but thanks to ever patient Tarrsteps who has broadened Jasmin's horizons she now lunges, long reins and as of this week has been backed, well sat on a few times, and is learning to enjoy being a riding pony.

Her passport says her colour is grey dun. She is grey dun in the winter and in the summer she is more dappled/iron grey with fleabitten grey markings on her head. Over both sides of her body she has the white spots which are quite visible in the photos. I really know nothing about colours and markings and I have only ever seen these white spots on chestnuts and never on a grey. Has anyone else seen them on a grey before?

Thanks. Not lines I know, but she seems to be in good company with some lovely highlands from the same! Very smart.

JFTD - What do you think of her weight wise? I am good at judging weight on my other horses but I struggle a bit with the Highland as she is naturally wide. She has really wide shoulders and doesn't appear to have any fat pads but she is in a super wide saddle, 12' D to D. To me she looks bigger than I would like and at times has a big belly but as she came to me as a companion and unbroken it was hard to reduce her weight with her living out full time. With the work she has been getting recently she is starting to look a bit better and I hope once she can hack and my school has been repaired (see my other thread!!) that she will lose some more weight.

I have heard of the spots before but can't think of where! She will muscle up when ridden. Has she had foals? Clandon ponies are nice! Does she hold a highland pony society passport? Good luck with her

They are called Tetrarch spots after a grey racehorse that had them. Some horses grey out like that, no one knows why.

Yes she has a Highland Pony Society passport and as far as I know she hasn't had any foals. She moves really nicely so I'm hoping she will be good under saddle. I'm 5'7 and Tarrsteps who is backing her is several inches taller than I am but she takes up a lot of leg with her width so we don't look too ridiculous. I'm used to 16.2 + so a big change.

I've just googled Birdcatcher and Tetrarch spots briefly and will look into it further. Thank you for that, I'd been looking up white spots but got nowhere without the proper names.
