Hi, I normally lurk round in NL and SB, but have been having a gander on here of late! I have a few general questions I will post at a later date, but first I thought I would introduce my two staffies!

This is Crash, he is my golden boy!

He is black brindle, and will be 12 in March. He has got thyroid problems which he has medication for. He has quite a character and adores to be fussed and cuddled.

He is my one and only, no one could replace him, I love him to bits!

He does not appreciate how big he is, and seems to think he is still that tiny cute puppy sitting on your lap. I have plenty of funny tales to tell you about him! He is one of a kind!

Bet my rottie could give them a run for their money ... i was off work ill a while ago ... he slept from 8:30pm right through to the morning ... went out for a wee early morning, got on the sofa with me and literally slept ALL day til OH came home from work! He ate tea then was back on his bed!!!! Not a bad life ay!!!

They're lovely and look good buddies. I see they also have to rough it when it comes to their sleeping arrangements, just like mine he sleeps where he wants

I love your staffies, very lovely. Smoke sounds a lot like my dog, he insists he can fit on my lap even though he is way to big!

Your rottie definitely wins 'paws' down on that one lol! I don't think it is to do with the fact they are dogs that like their sleep.... I think it is a male thing lol! My OH is exactly the same lmao! xx

LMAO don't even get me started on that one! Initially when I got my new sofa I was trying to keep it a dog free zone, but admittedly, I'm a softy and I like a snuggle at night time with them

The other day my OH had only put one clean blanket in their bed (they normally like two or three), we returned home to find Smoke had dragged the clean washing off the radiators and put some of my clothes in his bed!

Little terror - he's pure mustard but very clever lol!! The other week I found my favourite tiger print scarf in there! xx

That is exactly why I love them too! Plus they are a nice small dog that doesn't take up too much room in my small house, but they ooooooze presence when strangers knock on the door to be greeted by those brutes barking! Little does the stranger realise, but they are actually excited someone has come round lol! They are rubbish guard dogs!

My dog is the most vocal dog I know, he has a sound for every situation- lots of blurbles and shnuffles. I remember when I first had him my mum asked if he had sinus problems because of all the noises he was making

And as for sneaking washing in his bed, Moss doesn't go that far but he will sneakily pull a towel off the radiator to sit on it- I think he just likes to make extra washing for me

Love the name Crash too, pair of them are built like tanks!

Might need to pick your brains, my boy may have thyroid issues, he has a very low tear count and a very low heartrate, going for tests in a fortnight.
 
Thank you, yeah they are really lovely! Very sweet and affectionate! Have massive sulks and paddies mind - all of their head crinkles up when they frown lol - but they look so cute! xx

Oh thank you! He was named Crash because when we got him as a puppy, the first thing he did was 'crash out asleep' all day! Then when he ran on the wooden floors and tried to stop, he would skid and crash into everything! The name suited him well lol!

Uh the thyroid thing was awful at first - (that was when I didn't know what was wrong with him). I think it had been coming on for a while, but the signs weren't that obvious at first, it slowly progressed, and gradually over the months he got worse and worse. It was heart breaking, I thought it was old age setting in. He became really grumpy, lethargic, lost his spark and character. He stopped wanting to go for walks, stayed in bed all day, didn't want a fuss, and was putting massive amounts of weight on. I bought him decent senior diet food - still put weight on - gradually I cut it down to half what he should have - still over weight.

I had been to the vets with him, but he appeared healthy enough - we just put it down to old age ad to keep an eye on him.

He then started to lose his hair off the edges of his ears, a tiny patch off his tail, and then the hair on his sides started to thin out. His coat was dull and skin was really scurfy. I fed him cod liver oil but it didn't make a difference.

I treated him in medicated shampoo assuming it was skin related. He then went really down hill (in my eyes), he couldn't get up onto the sofa without help, and when he got down, his legs couldn't hold him and he fell on his face. It killed me watching him.

So back to the vets I went. Burst into tears thinking he had come to the end of his road, and thought the kindest thing was to pts!

How wrong was I! The vet reassured me that she suspected it may be a thyroid problem and would do tests.

The test came back and confirmed that he had an under active thyroid! Pheeeeew!

The vet said that's why he was putting weight on even though he was pretty much living off thin air, it effects their skin and hair, and they become depressed, hence why he never wanted to go for walks etc... He was put on daily medication, and after a matter of a couple of weeks, he had a whole new lease of life, he was like a young puppy again, oooooozing energy and life! The weight just dropped off him with no effort at all! The difference in him was amazing! He was my Happy Crash Puppy once again!

He goes for check ups every 6 months and has he bloods done to ensure they are giving me the correct level of medication for him. I pay just under £10 a month for his tablets, and I think it is around £70 for the check up every 6 months. He doesn't take an extra work to look after, and eats a normal diet - no special expensive food - I just feed mine a complete working dog dry biscuits, and he looks great on it! I just avoid giving him baths as frequent due to having dry skin.

No worries, my boy sounds identical, only he dropped weight. Lots of scratching and hair loss and generally down in the dumps and achey.

I thought it was allergy/intolerance for the longest time (having said that, I will only have owned him two years in March) but the vet said he will query a thyroid problem on the next visit because of the tear production/heart rate thing, he wanted the skin to clear up and treat a back pain issue first.

I was convinced it was bladder cancer last year (Google + symptoms may NOT be your friend) so it is a relief to think whatever he has, is manageable! Thanks x

It was the extreme worse case scenario if my talus bone died off and restricted my blood supply to my foot, but it's not likely in my case so far... I hope *touch wood* (I'm not taking any jinx chances on that one mind lol!!)

I hope you get it sorted and find out what's wrong with him. I know the vet told me that an over active thyroid problem (the opposite to Crash under active) would cause weight loss. Thyroid issues aren't curable but they are treatable, and very simply at that in Crash's case!
