Hello, I am 33 years old and I love horses! I used to go riding before I had my two children (so nearly 10 years ago!) and miss it dearly

. My husband has offered to buy me a horse so I am doing alot of research into the cost of keeping the horse, vet costs and insurance. I would very much appreciate any advice that anyone has on the costs and the general nitty gritty of owning a horse. Also any advice in the type of horse I should be looking for, as I am not a petite woman any more, so I would not want to cause back problems!! ( I am not a novice but I would want a horse that would increase my confidence again). I am currently looking for a school in my area for "refresher classes"! Thanks for reading my introduction, and also thanks for any advice in advance.

Hi and welcome

I allow about £2,500 a year per horse for DIY ... this includes Stable, Grazing, Minimal Vets Fees (ie innoculations), Insurance, Teeth, Farrier, Wormers and Hay and Bedding .... this does not include shows etc

I do it all myself though ... hope this helps a bit for a guide

Welcome to the forum Tabbi.

I don't have my own horse yet as I am currently saving for a house so unfortunately I can't help on the cost front. I'm sure everyone on here will be able to give you some advice though.

Hi Tabbi and welcome to HHO !
I have my own horse but live across the channel so advice would prob be irrelevant...
However, good for you for wanting to get back into horses, went through that myself after a long break and have never regretted it

Hello and welcome

Personally I would leave about £500 per month for a stabled horse. It shouldn't cost this much every month but this covers all eventualitys. For example some months you'll need saddler, farrier, vet, new rug, more feed and then theres insurance etc. Its better to be safe than sorry...

Some horses are cheaper than others, e.g some hairy types can live out with no shoes, but you do find yourself paying for hidden extras! Even if its just the cost of hay going up or whatever.

If you start having regular lessons at a reputable riding school im sure they will be able to advise you in due course what sort of horse would be most suitable for you.

It doesnt matter how much money it costs though or the other things you have to sacrifice on, its all worth it
