I have tried various energy mixes but still not getting the extra energy and sparkle I need. I have contacted Spillers and Dodson & Horrell who have told me to just feed more of it, which would cost me a fortune!
So I am now thinking of trying oats, as I haven't ever fed them before, what's a safe amount to start with? I'm a little cautious and don't fancy having a crazy beast on my hands.
I have a 17hh WB X TB, I mainly use him for dressage, he is worked 6 days per week = 3 days schooling, 2 days hacking 1 day lunging or pole work.

I have just introduced my slug of a WB to oats for the same reason and after feeding a scoop a day for the last week I still have a slug! Hoping it kicks in soon but I was told to just add half a scoop morning and night to normal feed but I would just trial and error for individual horses.
Hope it works for you.

Thanks Milliepup, is that a large or small sized scoop you're using? Mine prefers to use his energy up doing laps of the field when turned out and not channeling it under saddle, ha :)

i would run his bloods first to rule out any probs. then add half a scoop (normal stubbs scoop) am and pm. would also add a good glug of oil and some red cell or hemolyte or liquid blood.

I have never found Oats to have any effect on my horses.

Ditto this. I would suspect that if the horse has plenty of energy to charge about the field but not when ridden, there is either a problem causing discomfort (saddle etc) or the horse is bored with it's work.

The thing to remember is that no amount of feed will alter your horses temperment. If he is a laid back sort then you may never get the sparkle and energy that you require. Have you tried the HDF range of feeds by spillers or the response competition feeds - see link ; http://www.spillers-feeds.com/en-gb...cts-and-stockists/response-competition-feeds/
