have been discussing this for along time with my family, and we have decided that our JRT could do with some canine company- she has my cat to play with, but he has become ill (he is also very old) and doubt he will be around much longer

so mum really wants something along the lines of whippet/lurcher/greyhound, or a cross between these or another breed crossed with one of these. would consider getting one from a shelter.

just wondering, how do i go about introducing it to our JRT? shes 3yrs old now, so dont know if she would be protective over her "territory" or not (the cat was here before she came so the cat has always been boss!)? I have heard that greyhounds tend to chase cats- what about small dogs (my cat lives in the house now as he cant get about very well so we would either have him PTS or keep them in seperate rooms..)? or should we just not get another puppy?

advice really greatfull- thanks

i have no experience of this, but imo it would be best to have a barrier inbetween the two dogs when introducing them.

and if your cat is having trouble moving then it would be best to ahve him PTS. it was hard for me to agree for our cat to be PTS but if he is having troubel moving then it is honestly for the best.

not all greyhounds chase cats and there are plenty to choose from .just tell the shelter what you want and be honest if your jrt is a bitch try to get a neutered male greyhounds are mostly sociable as they live in kennels ,is you dog friendly toward others?why not just let them meet in the park or similar.make sure everyone in the family knows which dog is top dog and treat the chosen dog always first put her food down first, stroke her first.good luck

My two terriers were 12 & 13 a dog & a bitch when I introduced the cat, they hated cats with a passion

The cat moved it and wore the trousers from day one, they always respected her and still hated and chased other cats. Then I had a labrador puppy when they were 14 & 15 and they were fine again, not overjoyed but ok. Oh I also had a child before the cat and the dog and they were cool with that too. They have amazed me as the dog was quite dominearing and the bitch is very unsociable, but most dogs adapt to most things.

Introduce the new one while they are on neutral territory. Not the likes of inside, especially near food or the JR bed.

There are lots of people on here that can give really good advice. YOu're lucky, I love lurcher/greyhounds etc but Beastie is not a puppy kinda dog at all. She met my OHs JRT and wanted to eat him!
