Basically, it really gets my goat when people assume that becasue you own a warmblood you must be up your own arse...(I am not going to say look down on others, of course we do...warmbloods tend to be quite big)

Anyway, I own Bruce (My warmblood) because

1. He gave me my confidence back
2. He is a dude
3. He was dead cheap (bought him from a friend)
4. His temprament suits my temprament
5. We Gelled
6. His ability suits my ability
7. His trainability suits my trainability

If he was a heiinz 57, a Cob (perish the thought, owning a warmblood makes you a snob by default, apparently) or a tb, I would have bought him too.

I cannot abide the assumption that becasue I own the horse I do, I look down on people (or I am far richer, and bought him as a status symbol. This in NOT the case)

I would also like to add that when riding the level of riding you are at is a factor in the horse you own. My best friend owns a gorgeous ConnemaraxID who she has taken to elementary level affiliated (and wins time after time) however she is now looking at Warmbloods to take her up to the next level and beyond as the hairy grey thing just cant cope with the more advanced lateral work. Does that make her a snob? Or someone that wants to own a horse to compete to the ability she is capeable of?

I would like to also say that if my cob jumped 1.20's all day for fun I would never have sold him, but he was happy at 1m and anything more was not fair on him.

Grrrrrrrrrrr

ETS I have met some pretty talented non wb horses too, a few tb's but they are as highly strung as me and sometimes that can be a recipe for disaster.

I dont think people who own warmbloods are up there own! Its the persons attitude on top which counts... wether your on a donkey or top class warmblood!

Applies to all things I imagine..........I used to go about with a lot of people who did off roading in Landrovers. They are every bit as bad as equestrians etc.

"Mine's better than yours"
"Welllllllll, mine has a turbo charged doobery funker whatsit"
"Mine cost me.........."

I think normal people that own normal horses - even WBs :-)) are OK.

The ones with WBs that get up my nose are the ones that have the designer saddle, bridle, white dressage booties for hacking, white saddle cloth for hacking, the latest gold bit and of course the designer 'trainer' and the large lorry and despite all that have the riding ability of a sick parrot and shouldn't be let loose with a bicycle. - oh and of course constantly go on about their multiple buying trips abroad to purchase at an over inflated price said long suffering nag and keep name dropping at all the famous people they (didn't) meet whilst they were there.

Its jealousy! I wouldn't worry about it. My personal preference is tbs, or tbx and lots of people hate them! Likewise I'd never have a heavy cob, can't stand them!

PMSL

*whispers* I am very colour coordinated.

My horse wears the same colour bandages as numnah (but only because it measn I dont have to split the horsey wash!)

I agree, its proberbly jealousy. I own a TB and most people look down on her, especially showjumping, cos everyone has these beautiful big WBs, half of which dont complete the course as the riders just cannot control their horses.

people used to laugh at my little laid back appy x cob but when it came down to it they always want to swap half way though the hack as they are so tired from keeping there big, prancing horses under control.

obviously not generalising i have been out riding with some lovely down to earth people that own big Wb, Tbs etc. but i have no patience for the people that think they are better then other riders because of the size and breed of their horse.

horses for courses, and if you and your horse fit and work well together thats the only thing that matters IMO
xxx

yep - I see plenty of those around - overhorsed and rider lacking any noticeable ability.....other than in spending money ;-)

My point. If I could buy a cob with the ability of my WB I would have the cob. However Bruce does the job I want him to do. I have never wanted to swop with anyone or looked down on anyone..he just suits me both in temprament and ability?

I own a few heavy cobs and im tired of some people asking me when im going to get a real horse!!! If she was a car does that mean im driving a lada lol only joking.

Each person has their own preference in horses, i just happen to love the cobs. My friend rode Mae last weekend, she was never on a cob before and she thoroughly enjoyed it, wants to come back and ride her again.

See im not a WB person but i would never call someone a snob for owning one! The girl at the yard owns an ID x TB and im tired of hearing my horse can jump higher than yours, last time i said 'Yeah but my horse can kick yours harder lol'

Well I'm a snob because I eat Gregs instead of sixth form crap, and that was coming from my tutor. But people who catagorise other people are generally the ones who want to be someone who they're not.

*shrugs*
People are people and you will ALWAYS have some that bitch.
Whatever horse you own you will get the nasty comments,as long as you are happy with your lad thats all that matters.

I love my Mae, dont get all huffy when people say they hate cobs. I just find that with my riding ability that cobs suit me better as i can be nervous.

Ive rode my hubbies TB and enjoyed him too but i will never own one. Cobs are quite popular around here at the mo, seen a few now out competiting.

Have to say that my one of the best non cobby horses ive rode was a beautiful id mare

You can't generalise on any breed either, there are plenty of nutty cobs and sane tb's. I love my cob though, was on the verge of giving up riding until she came along.

Ha ha - I agree with Reynold!

I dont think those riding WB's are up their own butt. ANYONE can have a Warmblood if they want one! I had one, would never have another!

[/ QUOTE ]

What an odd comment, ANYONE can have a TB, ANYONE can have a cob, ANYONE can have a native pony....
confused.gif
I don't get your point. People can have whatever type of horse they choose, and quite right too - I hope they all enjoy them, whatever they may be! That's what horse ownership is supposed to be about - enjoying your horse! Gosh some of the posts on here today are so bitter and twisted. I am so glad I just have my own place, where no one interferes, I don't have to justify my methods to anyone and I can just enjoy my beloved horses.

So what if people want to spend all their money on WBs and fancy matching gear, but yet have no success competing. It's their money. How on earth does it affect you?
confused.gif

I personally think the over defensive comments from some people about the type of horse they own is quite odd. There's some people who seem to make a regular habit of defending their cob/pony, always so insistant that they are being looked down on, and it screams to me that they are jealous tbh.
crazy.gif

Ooo this is making me feel good
tongue.gif
I have a WB cross (well trakkie x RP, so hardly classy LOL!) I really like warmbloods, think they are nice horses, but I would never look down on a person for it, or call them a snob!! Would never look down on cobs either (though not keen on REALLY heavy ones) one of my fav riding school horses is a cob, love him
grin.gif
I don't generalise either tbh!! You can get exceptions to any breed.

Please explain to me Airdale/Seansheep/Reynold exactly how these people affect your life enough to get up your nose?
confused.gif
So what if they're "wasting" money and not having competition success - maybe they just enjoy themselves in the process. Does it annoy you that people can afford to spend so much to enjoy themselves?!
smirk.gif

Was this after the comment made in the other post?
smirk.gif

Seriously if someone said to you "pfft, my Hanovarian mare could do much better than your Bruce, whatever posessed you to buy a WB?" you'd think "my God, i cannot stand people who look down on Bruce because he's a WB!". You wouldnt be categorising Hanovarian owners would you? Or thinking they were all up their own bottoms? The same goes in all aspects of life, someone will always look down on you because they feel they have something better than you.

If it was re the comment made then I think (as I thought when you replied) you've taken it waaay out of context.
smile.gif

One of my very good friends owns a TB. To her, he's just him, big beasty, bit of a handful at times but no more important than if he was a cob. But on occassion you will get someone who will look down their nose and make out because they own a huge competition animal that yours is somehow less important. Doesnt mean it's resricted to one group of people.
smile.gif
I'm sorry if I put my point across in a manner which caused offence or categorised WB / Tb owners as stuck up.

I *think* the objection to these people was not the colour-coding and expensive kit as such, but more the way certain individuals who TEND to dress like this TEND to act. If there is someone in a warm-up ring sneering and making disparaging remarks about other people's inferior ponies or cheap tack, more often than not, that individual isn't riding a hairy cob and didn't arrive in a cheapo trailer.

Some people with severe inferiority complexes surround themselves with high-status possessions in order to boost themselves up. In order to draw attnetion to the fact that they have high-status possessions, they use reverse psychology. So they mightl comment on my cheapy saddle, to draw attention to the fact that they have a very expensive one, or disparage my horse to make theirs look better.

Obviously, not everyone who has nice kit or an expensive horse behaves like this. But, in general there is a huge tendency for the most unpleasant people to be those with "all the gear and no idea".

I agree with Puppy, if anyone with any horse manages to annoy you then the chances are you are probably jealous of them, even if you dont realise it.

I dont know what breed my horse is and I dont care. A girl at our yard has a gorgeous warmblood and he has lovely tack and she is the lovliest person alive, it doesnt irk me that she has lots of money - infact Im glad for her, and anyone else for that matter - who can afford the best things for their horses.
So what if some people cant win at SJ or have all the gear and no idea - so long as they arent harming their horses I dont think it matters to anyone.

Isn't that exactely the sort of comment the OP was refering to?
tongue.gif

and yes I share a warmblood, he has an expensive saddle and bridle, a gold bit (NS) and travels in a large lorry.
BUT
So does my wifes horse who just happens to be (gasp) a 14.1 welsh D.
At the end of the day they are all HORSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA - lack of riding ability is common to ALL breeds.
wink.gif

I don't care what type of horse/pony other people have. It doesn't affect me in the slightest. To be honest, it's never even crossed my mind to think of anyone differently based on their mount.
confused.gif

However, I do get dirty looks off a couple of people for having my boy. I just ignore them.
tongue.gif

that's the point - horses are nice to look at and nice to have regardless of the breed but really crossing threads here it's the way the horse is well ridden/caredfor/loved/treated that counts and not what it is

so it's not the snobbery of what breed it is - it's the 'snobbery' of the fact that some horses seem be more tolerant of 'abuse' than others - or more long suffering !! - and there will be tolerant/intolerant horses in all breeds and good and bad owners in all breeds

on my beautiful yard we have beautiful horses.... and lovely things and lovely people... and do you know what????? they range from an international dressage stallion to 2 gorgeous cobs and 2 retired oldies.
For me so long as they are able to do the job the owners are achieving what they want at the level at which they want then its ok by me.
They all get 5* treatment from me and my staff regardless.
I however insist that when i ride the bandages match the saddle cloths and yes i do have expensive equiptment but i worked hard for it and look after it and it reflects my attension to detail. It certainly does not make me think less of anyone.
Its easy to generalise in such a way and as said often those that make the comments about warmblood riders are frequently the ones with the bigotted opinions. I covet nothing and those people that 'have ' do not prevent me from achieving my goals. So whats the problem?
As said in the post defining warmbloods; on the whole it was just the way of breeding a good standard of riding horse. The most successful breeders are those that breed good horses for the mass market and it has nothing to do with snobbery but standards to maximise our relationship with the horse. This can be achieved with any animal its just by clear breeding policy and good data collection it takes out some of the guess work.It really does'nt have anything to do with snobbery but everything with people being able to enjoy their sport at whatever level.

I agree with you completely..who cares as long as horse and rider are having fun. In most circles horses are pets not a career choice ...Who cares if one horse has more expensive tack/boots/lorry than another not me

if i had loadsa money then i would have matching boots, numnah and probably a matching horsebox too! it just looks smart. i dont own Frankie but he has a synthetic saddle, cheapo brushing boots and a £30 bridle. all his boots, numnah/saddlecloths, and a few of his rugs, traveling boots etc etc are all the same colour (or variants of the same colour!) but the are all cheap, cus im skint. i think it just shows pride in appearance. and dont go all jumping on me, i didnt mean if you dont have it all matching then you dont care about your horse
smirk.gif
smirk.gif
thats not what i meant.
laugh.gif
tongue.gif

Frankie is a tbxwb and i loooooove him. i like warmbloods, and i also like thoroughbreds so hes perfick for me! i also like cobs, but i wouldn't choose to buy one, again with pure thoroughbreds. i like crosses, so a tbx cob or a tbxwb would be nice in my opinion. as would a welsh x tb
smirk.gif
smirk.gif

i dont look down on people who ride cobs, and i dont think people who own warmbloods are snobs. (oohh i rhyme!
grin.gif
) it aldepends on the person. believe me, i have met some snobby cob owners too

and yes, fully admit that i am jealous of rich people that can afford lovely horses and nice tack, and a great big horsebox. so what if they dont go out and win anything, at least they are having fun, which is what (IMO) horse owning/riding is all about.

i wish i had enough money to even own a horse!

I do think a lot of people seem to think youmust be either loaded or up yourself if you own warmbloods.

I own two, and like every horse owner I think they are gorgeous, however I didnt go out looking for a warmblood.

Before we bought Beau, we had been looking at TBxID's, welshxTB, all sorts, we just wanted a safe honest horse, and we happened to find Beau!
We got a fantastic bargain and yes he is well bred and has beautiful paces, BUT this isnt why we bought him, what makes him valuable to us is the fact he gave my Oh so much confidence, and has never put a foot wrong.

As for Lance, I started riding him when my old horse was so dangerous I wouldnt get on her back, I loved him so much I got him on loan, then his owner said I could have him. He has competed very successfully and yes is a warmblood, but none of this madeany difference to anything, I would have cared if he was a cob or a TB, it was his personality I loved, the fact he is gorgeous is just a bonus.
