So the inevitable happened yesterday and one of the dogs escaped and was hit by a car (currently in the vets being stitched back together).
Before I get jumped on, these are not my dogs but I do work with them a lot, I've done loads of obedience training with them and the bitch seems to have stopped running away, however apparently the dog hasn't (has been ages since he has though).
Not quite sure how it happened as we were at a show, I had taken them for a really long walk in the morning and they got put in their cage when I came back, not sure who let them out or where they were (there is an almost enclosed area that is safe for them depending on the wind blowing the electric gate slightly open), no one is owning up to letting them out.
Over the summer they were tied up on long lines outside their kennel so they could get in and out and we didn't have to worry about where they were constantly.
He is very quick to disappear, you literally take your eyes off him for 5 secs and he's gone, his recall is getting better, but if he's run because he's focused on something else then selective deafness applies, they don't normally get out to run free unless I'm there or the owners there as the other people on the yard just don't pay enough attention. I had actually organised some 1-2-1 training again just to strengthen the recall (think we may spend the healing time to train to whistle as well)
I don't like electric collars and not keen on invisible fences however given that this is going to end up in him being killed on the road I think this may be the last resort. I look at www.dogfence.co.uk but they won't install where we are, does anyone have any experience with invisible fences.
Trust me the riot act will be read to other people on the yard tonight at everyone except the 2 people who were at the show as I know that they weren't responsible, whilst these aren't my dogs to all intent and purposes they are my dogs and someone else pays for them, I do all of the training, any off yard walking and if I'm on the yard they won't listen to anyone else (they pretty much ignore them even if I'm not there), I had thought about GPS collars that had been mentioned previously on this forum but don't think they would help in this case where I'm not on the yard if I get a text to say they've left the perimeter (the owner was also with me so text messages going to her phone wouldn't have helped either), I still like these for going on walks so I know where he is even out of sight.

They're not failsafe as some high-drive dogs can just run through the shock and you do need to do a lot of training to make the dog understand what is happening.
Could a bigger/better kennel run not be built, and/or just use a padlock to which only certain people have the keys?

Cage is in the tack room so locking the door not really an option (there was also a fire 4 years ago and I would be really reluctant to lock them in somewhere just in case), what I liked about the dogfence one was the fast react, it sounds the first beep at 0.125secs, so running at 20mph (he's got short legs so that's unlikely) it would beep at 3.6ft, they also have a memory i.e. if enter the correction level twice in 24hrs the correction is increased by 1 level and then wiped after 24hrs, it automatically shuts down after 15secs in case they get stuck in the correction zone.
I do think he would learn, he's so much better already with the training and it's not all the time now that he runs away, but he's pointer cross and just loses focus, nose is constantly on the ground.
I do think he would learn very quickly and between the trainer and myself the training would be taken care of.
Think he's going to be on box rest (along with 3 horses) for a while so I do have time to look at alternatives, but living on a farm trying to block escape routes is tricky (he jumps 5 bar gates when i arrive).
I know nothing is infallible but I'm running out of options, we initially thought he had broken a bone last night that was protuding from the skin, turns out that it wasn't broken but the skin had been taken off down to the bone.

Ah right by cage I thought you meant a dog run, that would be my solution TBH, you can get the flatpack ones with roofing (to prevent jumping out) pretty cheap and the agents usually assemble them in minutes - then padlock that.

If he is a nose on the ground type dog with hunting in his genes, I wouldn't guarantee an electric fence would keep him in TBH x

I agree with CC, I think a proper dog run is your answer. If he's running off, he could just as easily get hurt within the confines of the electric fence as without them, especially on a farm.

My parents installed one many years ago when they had a unfenced 1 acre garden with road frontage.
I think it was call Freedom Fence.
It was hugely successful with their Rottweiller & Labrador - the Rottie would bark and run up and down an imaginary line, and the local polica were very impressed when they passed one day.
It was also successful on the Bull Mastiff to a degree, however he learnt he could bolt across it - he didn't do it all the time, just once in a blue moon.
If you held the collar in your own hand (ie not on the dog) and approach the fence line, the dogs would take a step back if the beeping warning tone changed.

Failing that, as others suggest, a proper dog run - you may get something on ebay, failing that, i've also seen 2nd hand security fencing for sale (the stuff they put round building sites) would that offer a solution. At least then they can mooch about loose and in safety.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HERAS-SEC...135?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c1ffcdef7 obviosuly also depends on how big the dogs are, and how high they can jump, crawl, squeeze etc. I think you can get higher panels than this.

You can clearly get gates too - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-buildin...727?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item415e9f3a6f

and something like this for a lid - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weld-mesh...den_Structures_Fencing_CV&hash=item3f0f1bcb01

Hope i'm not proposing something dangerous - never had a dog run (never needed one), but it's a cheaper option to a proper run

Finally - has he had is nuts off ;-) may curb the wonder lust

I couldn't trust them

My friend has one as she lives in the middle of nowhere. One day the collar failed, they obv didn't know, how could you? Dog got out and was run over and killed.

If you do decide on it, then check the collar every day!

Picked him up from the vets last night, very sore, huge deep graze down one side, they have somehow managed to stitch his elbow back together, on Sunday night I honestly didn't think they would be able to, I was waiting on being told skin grafts, deep laceration on the inside of his right hind hock joint and a burst lip.
Went with the owner to pick him up so that she could sit in the back with him, vet went to collect him and you could hear him screaming, owner was freaking out a bit and I did say at that point that it was probably just because the vet had went near him to touch him (he's really funny about strangers and men in particular), sure enough vet came back through and the screaming had been because he had put a leash on him!!!
Got him home where he then lay down on his sore side (seemed quite happy and wonder if the pressure on it was helping), got a bit tense when the kids came home but was quite happy with the attention, little bit of a sticky moment when I went to leave to go and get a head bucket for him he had obviously forgotten about his injuries and tried to get up and come with me, which then resulted in more screaming when he stretched it (can you tell he's going to be a typical man about being injured:)), when I left last night he was lying on a dog bed with a quilted pad on top of it and covered with a Hello Kitty fleece looking very sorry for himself.
Just spoke to the owner, bit of a sleepless night with whimpering and needing lots of cuddles, bit brighter this morning, been out for a pee.
Will look at the other things that have been posted as suggestions, got a few weeks to decide what to do, trying to figure out where would be sheltered enough for a dog run as they do have a set of 3 runs up already but they are very exposed and the dogs get quite cold quite quickly in the winter.
Spoke to everyone on the yard and have discovered who it was, the dogs had been out, got through onto the yard and when the last person left, instead of putting them in their cage/kennel/back through to the house, they left them and closed the barn doors over from the outside not realising that they don't close properly and the dogs can get them open, so very guilty feeling person on the yard

Thanks, looked at Freedom Fence but the dogfence product seemed to be better all singing all dancing does everything except walk the dogs for you type of thing and I really liked the response times for the beeping 0.125secs. Could just be that DogFence have a better marketing team and have talk up, but couldn't find anywhere on freedom fence that told what the reaction times were if it had an automatic cut if they got stuck in the correct zone etc.
Mesh fencing we have already but it's the 5 bar gates that we have to use to get horses in and out the field and the yard that he jumps (his sister wriggles under them rambo style).
Yes his *******s came off at about 6 months (now 2.5yo), mother was a working pointer and he seems to have taken after her (she's a softy as well), sister has taken after the father who is a miserable grumpy little toad (Japanese Chin)

If they have runs maybe you could improve them more cheaply and easily than getting a new one? Maybe by putting fence panels up to shelter them from the prevailing wind, and looking at the kennel bits of the arrangement to make sure they are nice and cosy with plenty of bedding material they can burrow into?

As Spud says, put some panels up or just whack in a kennel.
We live up a mountain and it is very blustery, we use the same kennel boxes the police use, and Vetbed for one and rubber matting for the bed eater :p
