an invisible fence type things for your dogs?

We have one brand that is a wire that you run along the boundary of your property, and the dog wears a collar with a little revicever box on it, which has the ability to shock the dogs (like invisible white electric fencing).
You can set the distance up to 10 yards from where the line is, the dogs get a warning beep if they cross that before they get shocked, the idea being that you train the dog to retreat when they hear the beep.

have you ever used them? and what are your opinons on them?

A previous YO that I know used the type you describe, she always thought it was excellent and once the dogs had got used to it then they never tried to stray. I often encountered her dogs trotting down the lane but I never liked to dispel her illusions

I have one. My dogs respect it completely to the point that they no longer have to wear the collar and will only cross it at my invitation. However. terriers and 1 particurlarly obstinate rotty have been known to test it!!

I have tried this with two dogs. one respected the fence and had to be taken over the gateway either in a car or carried. The other closed its eyes and ran straight over the fence. Not ideal in either instance.

We had it at our old house and it was very effective - even on the Rottie.
Our old Bull Mastiff was ok with it too, but in moments of stress could bolt and learnt in this instance he'd only get a quick zap.
99% of the time very effective, even the police stopped and were very impressed to see a Rottie barking and running up and down an invisible line.

It was the only thing that stopped our 6ft fence jumping Labrador from roaming the village.

I think they are very good for persistent offenders, however they are definitely not 100% as if the terriers could see a rabbit they would indeed shut their eyes and charge the fence!

A useful tool that I'm sure has stopped dogs getting put down or run over (despite the dogs league opinion on them).

Most dog owners in the US use invisible fencing. I don't like it. We were accosted a few months back by two aggressive Labs who bolted clean over the electric line. And not that it's a concern over in England, but it offers zero protection against wandering coyotes.

ok if they work as they should sometimes you find that a dog crosses the line, but then won't go back home as it knows it will get zapped.
