Involuntary pooing

Sorry lovely topic.

I have my colleagues 15 year old dog staying as they are away for a few says. It's a huge responsibility..... He means the world to them.

However he has been put on tramadol ( also on meta am and antiboitics) but he seems to have lost the ability to control his poo. He goes out ( literally we are in all day so please don't think he is shut up) wees and then comes in and poo literally falls ou of him ( no upset tummy etc)

To me it seems neurological and maybe a sign of anti immflammatories ? Any ideas?
 
Tramadol is to me 'an end of the line' drug. Do you know why he's on it? I should think he probably doesn't know where he is or what he's doing if he's on such heavy duty drugs.
 
It could well be the meds but given his age it could be associated with that, have you googled the side effects of these drugs as it may well give you your answer. Only a vet could tell you for sure so when your friends get back it would be a good idea for the dog to go and see one. Whatever the cause it cant be very nice to deal with so I hope your friends are back soon.

My old brown Dobe who had wobblers started to do this and was completely unaware he was doing it, the vets advice was to pts while he still had some dignity.

I thought that too, shot hips I think....... Think you have hit he nail on the head just do not want to be losing their pride and joy on my watch ! Think the pooing is a result and he just can't help it, luckily we have old carpets and not house proud but poor boy!

Yes I have, they have vet appointment Monday , dog is not in pain if that makes sense.... Poor thing may have little clue to where he is! Suppose I see how old he is as my lot are 12,7 and 3!
 
He's a great age and it is probably mix of age and meds.

I know it's not your dog but if his hips are 'shot' and he is unable to toilet I would be thinking about quality of life. Are they sure it is his hips and not CRDM (symptoms can be similar and often confused, it is neurological and the dog loses power in the rear end first and then the front end).
 
He has arthritis in his hips and OCD in elbows..... He actually is ok on his legs.... Maybe shot was the wrong word! Thanks for suggestions!
