Iris Robinson has offered the services of her Christian Psychiatrist who allegedly turns homosexuals back into heterosexuals.

Personally I found her comments condescending at best, she seems to think that to be gay is an illness to be cured - and I am not a homosexual so God only knows how gay peeps felt.

What are others thoughts?
 
It never fails to amaze me how intolerant and bigoted some so called 'christians' can be.

I must have misread the bible because I am sure it called for tolorence and acceptance of others......

Honestly? I am strangly facinated by the complete lack of understanding, her view that she and her "christian psyciatrist" know better than the rest of the scientific community and that she had the audacity to use an event like she did to plug her outdated and frankly narrow minded views!

Why people should be allowed to hide behind religion whenever they spout vile and spiteful comments is disgusting and whoever regulates the mental health apparatus in NI should look into the license of said psychiatrist. Iris ought to come down from her pedestal and release that love is not ugly!
 
I don't agree with her point of view but I do firmly believe that she has a right to hold that view and express it. So many times people are afraid to say what they believe because of the 'PC brigade' who want to stifle any opinion but what they think you should hold.
I say again I really don't agree with her but (quote)"I would fight to the death for her right to say it"
 
I can see your point re freedom of speech... but there is a difference between saying " in my opinion homosexuality is wrong" which would be her right, to advocating scientifically disproven medical advice based on predjuice...

How intensely hurtful for any homosexual to hear that.
It always amazes me how Christian people can do things that cause pain in some who already may be having a tougher road than others.
Our local Castle owner has just had his marriage licence revoked as he refused to allow gay couples to marry there. Yes it's his own right to do that, but how Christian is making some members of society feel unwelcome?
Two of my closest friends have been a couple for 27 years; when you are in their company it's no different to anyone else, and I love them both dearly.
you are as you are born, whether it's gay/straight/red haired/with freckles or blue eyes.
I'd love to see her ask her spiritual psychiatrist change someone's eye colour...

yep it does...buuut I take that as meaning, not to have gay sex as such, as I know one gay christian, who is attracted to men, and cant be cured

Does she also pass judgement on Judeism, aetheiesm, vegans? What is a label? Some may say that the lady professess too loudly ... maybe the fantacy is in the eye of the beholder.
 
As one of these "homosexual" I do sometimes feel hurt by peoples opinions, but as Yorks points out, she's entiltled to her opinion.

What upsets me is when I have to cover up the truth about my sexual orientation. I don't want to shout it from the rooftops but I don't want to be living a lie. Unfortunately I work in a very upper middle class environment where homosexuality is just a no no!

BTW what did this woman actually say?
 
I think she said something along the lines of she a knew a doctor who had "cured" people of homosexuality

What a strange psychiatrist he/she must be. The woman who made the comment maybe should be allowed to post her opinion, however the psychiatrist should not be allowed to make claims of a 'cure' which has not been sugject to peer review and a study where his/her methods 'worked' over a number of cases as against a control group, or other methods of work.

I am surprised that 'trendybraincell' has to hide his/her homosexuality. I really thought those days had gone and that people didn't take any account of that any more. I thought the world in general had moved on.

Couldn't have said it better myself!
 
I don't care whether someone is straight, gay or bi.
But I applaud Iris Robinson and her Chxxxtian psychiatrist's right to offer to 'cure' homosexuals, for so many reasons;
1. We all have a right to free speech - I wouldn't want that curtailed.
2. Allowing people to make such views known, allows me, in turn, to make quite a good judgement of their character.
3. It keeps Iris R and her psychiatrist off the streets and out of worse mischief

4. In men at least, there have been studies which suggest a gene for homosexuality - I'd love to know how she's going to 'cure' someone's genetic makeup?

But is it inherited? Kind of can't be if offspring end with a committed homosexual (in the days before test tubes) so you might have assumed this gene would have died out. Just me musing in a chicken/egg kind of way....
 
Not really mother hen, as homosexuality was illegal until the 1960's(?) gay men had to hide their sexuality, often by marrying and having children. They would continue to be gay, even if it was not possible for them to have homosexual relationships.
 
I'm not involved in the study of gay genetics, so checked my notes for you!
Hamer (1993) studied family trees which pointed to a gay gene on the X chromosome - identified as being in the Xq28 region of the X chromosome. The gene wasn't linked to homosexuality in women, however, indeed they thought it could heighten female heterosexuality instead.
There's also been some research into brain structure by Levay, a neuroscientist - who found that the interstitial nucleus of the anterior hypothalamus was, on average, substantially smaller in 19 gay men who died from AIDs compared to 16 heterosexual men (1991).
There are some questions regarding replicability of the studies, and whether any one gene alone can determine human sexual behaviour - if you want all the refs let me know and I'll PM you (heavy reading warning!

Yes there was a programme shown on television about homosexuality in animals a few years back which caused controversy amongst some sectors of the community if my memory serves me correctly.

Its strange really, in many ways the world has moved on, what with "gay marriages" and the like, but still many people have closed minds. A work friend is fine with homosexuality, but doesn't want her children to be gay because they will have a harder life?!

I don't want to go round in gay pride marches, shouting to the heavens "I'm gay"...I just want to be able to be myself, not tell half truths etc.

Homosexuality most likely goes back right through human history, however it doesn't mean that procreation is off the menu, I would imagine people understood how to have their cake and eat it too!

I understand that of course laws and public attitudes of the time would have forced gay men into heterosexual relationships, but not all - and this is why it would have been a declining gene.

Im a homo and I dont care what this woman believes although they are her thoughts and opinions and yo have to respect that- I for one dont need curing, or want to be and im quite happy living my life being in love with men! Amen!
