As title says.

Been looking for a SAFE, SANE ID with very little success. Seen a few ads in Ireland, Scotland and Wales but cant for the life of me find anything in the East Midlands or nearby.

Gelding, over 8 and must hack alone and be safe and sensible (had enough 'exciting' 'quirky' horses to last a lifetime).

Budget up to 5k. Don't want a world beater, just something to hack, do local hunter trials, pop a few jumps, a bit of low level basic dressage.

Am I looking for the impossible? Im pulling my hair out as have been looking for 5 months avidly, driving all over the place too.

Anyone know of anything or anything coming up for sale soon?

Might be preaching to the choir but there's a FB page "Irish Draught and Irish Sport Horses Network"

I'm not in the market just a big ID fan and will be looking for one when I'm next in the market!

Good luck on your search and please post photos when you find something :)

Don't know of anything myself, but try Jo Ackroyd of Graceland stud - she's on fb. She won't have anything that age herself, but might know of something roundabout. She's near Rotherham, just into South Yorks from Notts.

I think you are looking for the nearly impossible regardless of budget, what you want is hard enough to find without the added restriction of it having to be an ID, most people who have this paragon will be keeping it so the few that come up for sale will be very much in demand and likely to mean traveling and getting there very quickly.
I think you need to open your criteria to a part bred or ISH with a decent amount of draught blood rather than just waiting for a full bred unless you need one for a specific reason in which case I would look at lowering the age and finding one that has been well produced by a good breeder, a nicely started 5 year old could fit the bill but may well be over budget.

Thank you yes I would consider a part bred as long as its not a TB type and could probably stretch the budget for the right thing. Perhaps I need to travel again - just getting so tired as have driven literally hundreds of miles already! Fingers crossed.

Do you want registered pure bred ID?
Just if you are, you might have to look at older horses, i.e in their teens or a bit of a bigger budget

Thanks yes I don't mind an older horse or a cross breed and can prob stretch the budget a bit. Its just so frustrating looking !

Thanks so much yes I am already a member of two of these groups and have posted on there but will try the other one you mention that Im not a member of. Fingers crossed!

Have to say that for a RID with that skill set that feels like a very tight budget - I've recently obtained a 3yo unbacked ID and when I was looking at youngsters the 2/3 yo's were mostly advertised at around 3-4K so 5K for that sort of age and well schooled etc isn't much (sorry to rain on parade)
Might be worth looking at older or younger as while a younger one may well be green doesn't mean they'll be crazy on you

I bought a 5 yr old ID mare unseen from Ireland, for 5k euro, as sane and sensible as you could expect from a 5yr old and will definitely be a keeper. People just don't move them on once they have them.
Jack Thomas-watson might also be worth a try, he has a FB page.

I've just sold exactly that horse, and within your budget. But a mare .......

And I have the 5 yr old version here. But by the time he is 8, I'd want a lot more than 5k for him.

Why rule out mares? I have an ID mare and shes everything you would want. Kind calm athletic biddable...and a handy 16.1. Some of the pure ID geldings grow very big we bred 3 grew till 8 yrs and turned out over 17hh, the mares of same breeding were 16 - 16.2hh.

Agreed - there will be some but few and far between so the more picky you are, the longer it will take and the quicker you need to be on getting there (totally understandable and reasonable, just impacts your chances of finding anything) . I'd suggest extending the age band, inc part breds and mares, and increasing budget always helps.

I got mine at 5yo - younger than I had wanted (like you, I wanted a more established 8yo) but, if they have the right temperament and trainability, it can work out well.

ETA - would you consider a trip to Ireland and use a sales agent?

I not entirely opposed to a mare - I just prefer geldings. If the right one came along I would certainly go and see it. Im flexible on most of my requirements and going to up the budget based on feedback on here.

Thank you for that - yes I think good horses are like men - people hang onto the good ones! Ill check out the person you mention on facebook.

Thanks yeah Im flexible on a lot of my requirements and I can up my budget (live on porridge for a while lol). I'd be happy to consider a part bred too. Have started considering a trip to Ireland and also wondered about an agent, though no idea who to use - might need a separate post on that!

I live in the East Midlands and have been horse shopping recently and there are a few about, will link any ads if I come across them.

With a slightly limited budget I suggest maybe thinking outside the box. Try not to ‘refine’ your searches on sites too much by putting in breed, all rounder etc. Most ex hunters would probably be more than happy to do what you want so have a look on hunting categories. Similarly on the likes of preloved only search ‘Irish’ then ask if it’s papered when you enquire... sometimes the owners aren’t quite aware! Be a little inventive in searching!

Also if money is slightly flexible I’d be looking <6k if it’s open to offers and with tack. You will have to spend the money to get tack or existing stuff fitted so if the horse has a made to measure saddle included in price it’s worth paying extra. (Obviously check out saddle fit when trying)

Thank you so much Id be really grateful for the extra pair of eyes / ears. I don't mind waiting to find the right one and can up the budget to about 8k. I can also be flexible on my requirements - if the right mare came along Id be happy too. This is good advice and will stop looking under 'all rounders'. Would rather wait and find the right one anyway and avoid trips to Ireland if I can help it.

Have you contacted Janet George at Indigo Irish Draughts... near Kidderminster? She's got a cracking 15.2 for sale...I hacked her out and she was fab! But it's a mare and you'll need to increase your budget a bit....

Determined not to end up starting another youngster, I spent 6 months looking for the sane and sensible, done a bit of everything 8 year old ID but they are like hens teeth.Even with a decent budget, there are none out there for sale, and why would you sell one like that ? So I ended up buying a 5 year old Indigo Irish Draught from Janet George. Her horses have a reputation for being level headed and so far so good. Indie was a lot greener than I'd wanted but to date has been very sensible and I've got someone helping with hacking her out in the week to get some miles on the clock. You might need to up your budget a bit but I would certainly recommend contacting Janet.
