As per title, friend sadly lost her cob and is now ready to start looking for a new bud :)

She has always had a preference for ID or ISH and she is looking for and ID or ISH (ID is preference). She wants something 4 - 7 years old, 15.2 - 17hh (would prefer horse not to be 17hh at 4 years as it will grow!). She would prefer a gelding but will consider mares. Not fussy on colour but she is a sucker for a grey. She isn't keen on roman noses, and would prefer for said horse to be a MW - she doesn't want anything too light because of her build, but would prefer not to have a HW.

Based in Buckinghamshire and for obvious reasons would like to keep the search local, although if sh struggled she would look to go further afield. We've found one on Horsemart that she is going to see on Thursday, but she wants to see a few more. She doesn't mind bringing on as she is experienced if horse is green etc.

Doesn't want to spend the earth, but will pay if horse is right.

Any ideas, opinions or recommendations?

Home made lemon drizzle cake for the help! :D

We've had a look on there and I recommended my friend to her given all the recommendations there are on here! Only thing is Emma seems to have a lot of cobs and that isn't so much what my friend is after.

She doesn't want a cob as her last boy was a cob and she doesn't want to start comparing them.

The horse can't be too fine; she's aware of her build and wouldn't ride a horse if she thought she would be too heavy for it. She's about 5'8 size 16, has longer legs and is a 'stocky build' but I would not consider her fat (despite what she says!). Weight I would estimate as 12 - 13 stone. She has ridden for 30 odd years and is very light nd balanced in her seat ( a lot of people at our yard have been lovely and offering her rides on their horses so she doesn't miss out).

Hope the extra info helps :)

Searxh on this, there was a post a couple of weeks ago something along the lines of 'irish draughts, what do you do with yours' lot of people and suggestions on it

I remember reading the thread but didn't recall that many breeder/dealer suggestions were made. I know of JanetGeorge from the forum and have recommended if she needs to start looking further afield :)

Will go and have another nose (just an excuse to drool over the pictures again!)

Cougar, Rolo, Chloe, Maddie, Poppy, All the Colours, Bunty aren't cobs. Personally really like the look of Rolo. :)

I lost my IDx in November and spent six solid months looking - I now have two!! One is a 4YO pure ID, and the other is a 6YO IDxISH. They cost £4K & £8.5 K respectively. So it can be done. I sourced both mine in Ireland. HOWEVER, it is not necessary to go to Ireland to get them if you work with the right dealers. If you want a couple of suggestions, PM me as I prefer not to mention dealers by name else the wrath of the FC may arise.

Yes please :)

Yes I acknowledged that above - have recommended larry and seamus. I like rolo! The pictures are a bit fuzzy so it is hard to see whether they are a MW. She isn't keen on coloureds. The main issue I have with the ones you've recommended is that they look too light for her. I might ask her to contact Emma and get some better pictures so it is a it easier to tell.

agreed. Photos can be so inaccurate! My girl was a lot heavier in real life that the photos on the ad (that actually was her only negative!! I didn't want something so chunky ! ha ha!)

If your friend is prepared to consider something just backed, I've got several that could suit - 3 pure-bred Class 1 mares (all grey) to make 16-1 - 17hh; a grey 3/4 bred gelding (to make 17hh) and a stunning bay Gelding to make 17hh - all 4 year olds this time. All good middle-weights. But I don't often have anything older - they're all home-bred and tend to jump off the shelf as fast as they're backed (and are rarely advertised.)

Do you have any pictures? Let ,e know and I'll PM you my email address :)

Thanks!

not sure if you are near Derbyshire but I got my ID from http://www.yewtreefarmirishsporthorses.co.uk/page_814102.html mine is the big grey on the for sale page about 3/4 down by Castana, he is now about 16.3 and nice and chunky, he looks quite light in the pictures but has 'furnished' well. It might be worth contacting them as they seem to have all sold signs on the for sale, but they do get quality stock in. Beautiful breed and I would never go back!! I do have an ISH but you can't beat a pure ID :)

I love your horse, well the one in your signature anyway. I often admire her when I see you posting :o

This place always has irish types in and by all accounts has a good reputation?

http://www.stubleyhollowfarm.com/ - think the chustnut mare 'minnie' on there is an absolute stunner and had I the time or money I think I would be off to have a look at her myself!

Just spent an entertaining few minutes reading this - too far for me but I like what I read !

There are several ridden draughts for sale on the IDHS (GB) site at the moment. The breed society would also give links to breeders. If the OP can bring on a youngster, then something from a breeder would be ideal, as it would be unspoilt and if it's one from Janet George it will have been brought up very well and started correctly. I also think it is vital to support british breeders if possible before going through dealers who are importing horses.

In your position I would be making a call to Janet and then the breed society web adverts and stud listings.

Unless the photo is deceiving, the picture of the partbred mare at stubley hollow farm, in my opinion, which is probably worthless, is a of a heavy top on very little bone. The grey looks a much better type. Their adverts also indicate the very big difference between a 'heinz variety' cobby type that might have a dash of ID and a true RID. I am not criticising the cobs, they are super family animals and I own a smashing cob mare, but so many people seem to think a cob is a RID. My pet hate is the advert of a coloured cob proudly claiming to be a RID.

I have owned RID's for years and when I lost both I could not find another one for love nor money. That was 6 years ago and after much searching I realised people just do not part with these wonderful horses, my boys were with me for life and I would never have sold them at any price.

Good luck in your search

A lot of wisdom in this, thank you. I agree with reference to your comments on cobs; a lot of horses we have looked at claiming to be a true RID are clearly not. My friend and I have nothing against cobs - in fact we are both big fans of them, but the only reason they have been ruled out is that her last lad was a cob and she lost him in circumstances which were hard to take. He without doubt, was one of the best, most intelligent and personable horses we have ever met and the danger she has realised is that getting another cob would be too much of a comparator for her, which she knows isnt fair for her or the horse.

I have already referred her to JG, and have asked JG for pictures and details of the horses she has. My friend would prefer to stay local but she will travel for the right horse as I've said already :)

Thanks again guys!

Fine and Dandy, you too talk alot of sense about comparing/replacing horses.

I tried to do just that when I lost my ID by Embla George in tragic circumstances. I travelled the UK looking for another. I emailed dealers detailing my requirements and even included a picture of him.

The end result was heartbreak and a sobering lesson that taught me every horse is a one off. You cannot and must not attempt to duplicate it is not possible and years after the event I am glad I could not achieve it.

I actually bought a foreign bay gelding and have had huge fun with him and never once have I thought about comparing him to my ID. Even though he does the same activities that the ID did he is just totally different, the only thing they share is a golden temperament.

And to prove a point, I had a livery come into my yard who had a big grey ID and everytime that horse put his head over the door I wished he was not in my yard. The memories were too painful, even though the horse didn't really look like my boy apart from the big soft eye that most draughts have.

Look forward to seeing a picture of your new boy in due course !
