Heard it on the radio this morning. This is all I can find at the moment.....

A member of Ireland's 2004 Olympic equestrian squad in Athens is in a critical condition in an English hospital today following a weekend car crash.

Edmond Gibney (32) of Kells, Co Meath, suffered severe head injuries in a car crash in the south of England on Saturday night.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire after being involved in a collision on a narrow bridge.

Mr Gibney competed in the individual competition in the 2004 Olympic three-day event.

Fingers crossed he's ok

This is my friends good friend, i was with her yesterday when they rang and told her. It happened near her house in Bury, West Sussex. He has been operated on and is now being kept in a coma - they say could be from 72 hours up to 2 weeks, but apparently this is normal for head injuries, as they wont wake him up until they are sure he will react in a positive way (not explaining very well but i dont really fully understand). All we know is they havent woken him up and given up yet, so that is a good sign. His mum has flown over, and my friend is hoping to see him asap, but no visitors yet for a while.

Very sad, especially when its so close to home. My friend is devasted naturally so just keeping fingers crossed

He's such a lovely guy - met him when i was stewarding the Sjing at Borde Hill BE and he was really nice - fingers crossed he makes a full recovery

Its very common for head injury cases to be kept in total sedation ( coma), I think to give the brain a chance to recover from trauma. My cousin was kept in a coma for a month after an accident, they just tested his ability to breathe unaided, after about a week. Then kept him in total sedation. I dont know the guy but he really is in a good hospital. They have an excellent ITU and Head injury unit there.

Fingers crossed for him.

God what a shock. I know Ed from round the circuit especially now i am in the same area. Really top bloke and hope he gets better soon. any further updates apprieciated x

Gibney in critical condition after car crash
Event rider Edmond Gibney is still in a "critical but stable condition" in the neuro Intensive Care Unit of Southampton Hospital following a car accident last Saturday night.
The 32-year-old, who has been based in England for the past number of years, was involved in a head-on collision with another car at a narrow bridge in Southampton. The driver and passenger in the other car were uninjured.
Gibney suffered serious head injuries, which include a fracture at the base of his skull. With his immunity compromised, he picked up a chest infection this week. He is currently heavily sedated, but is said to be showing some very slight signs of improvement.
A native of Kells, Co. Meath, Gibney was a member of the Irish squad at the 2004 Olympic Games with King's Highway. In recent years he has concentrated on the English National Curcuit.
"Our thoughts are with his family," Eventing Ireland chairman Neil Morris said this week. "We hope he will make a full recovery and we look forward to seeing him compete again," he added.
Gibneys mother Dolores and other members of his family are keeping a bedside vigil at the hospital. Several of his Irish-based friends attended a special mass for him in Roscrea Parish Church yesterday morning.

As of 15th March Ed was still VSI but was slowly being brought out of sedation. Anyone who has met Ed will know what a diamond he is. I am sure he and his family would appreciate knowing that people are thinking of him. If you know Ed and have time why not drop a note in the post:
