A irish martingale just goes from one rein to the other, it doesn't do anything but keep the reins together, which is why they use them for racing incase the jockey comes off. I don't see a reason to need one for everyday riding. I suppose you could use one to stop you opening the reins too much but a bib running martingale would do the same.
I think it is more if my pony escapes from me before I get on she doesn't break her reins again. I am starting to dry up on the money front when it comes to buying new reins
It might work. But I have seen horses get the reins over their heads even with the irish martingales on. You could probably make one just to try, see if it works before you buy one?
got one already it came with the pony I think... found it in tack box anyway. I was just wondering if it could make it more dangerous if the reins did go over head
I don't think so. I suppose it could tighten the reins round a leg but it would move up and down the reins. It might just be enough to stop the reins going over her head. What does she do? Does she normally get the reins over her head?
she bucks around me so i often let go because I don't want her to kick me or she pulls off just before I am getting on and then she bucks and the reins go over her head.
yes it all fits her fine she has been out of work a while and plays up when she sees other horses in field. Also scared of lots and she is good when she can see me but I think when I get on she gets a bit paniced lol. She is getting better though
