We have just discovered that the mare we purchased from a dealer last year has, in fact, got a microchip. She originates from Ireland and the vet confirmed that the chip is of Irish origin also. Does anyone know how I could use this information to trace her history? I'm not sure how far we would want to take it in case we find something we would rather not know! But I am curious to know how useful chips are.

Is your horse a TB?
If so tracing should be possible

Does this mean ie if microchip not recorded on passport that dealer re-passported your horse?

If he's a partbred chances are he'll be in the Irish horse register. Ring them with the number and they should be able to help. Tbh it's prob not that he's got anything to hide but passport didn't arrive with horse or has been mislaid. We get quite a few over from Ireland like this! They just sneak the ponies on the front of the lorry where they won't be checked properly.
