Irish peeps- yards near Dublin?

Hello! a friend of mine has moved to Dublin from Germany and is thinking after years of sharing a horse of taking the plunge and buying her own ... Can anyone recommend good yards close to dublin or easily accessible by bus/train? Also, roughly how much does livery cost around dublin? I only know prices around London, which are hideous enough

Expensive - €100 min for full livery.

killosery stud is north of dublin - good facilities and training, competitions etc

irish field is the horsey news paper in ireland and lots of livery adds in there.

Websites: boards.ie, gumtree.ie - livery in south dublin if you go to google.ie then search livery dublin, irishhorsetrader.com, donedeal.ie

prices have come down a little since the economic crisis as a lot of horses given up in ireland
 
Hey - yeah per week, might get €80 per week further out in country. Yeah London livery dear and not much of it - looked into it once for a job. Not sure where is close to Dublin city as traffic bad to get out of city - train might by quick to get out i suppose. Good luck

I currently pay nearly double that so it really depends on the yard but I wouldn't think you'd find full livery for less than €100.

I think she may have trouble finding somewhere easily accessible by train/bus. I'm not too familiar with yards in Dublin but I can recommend some in the Kildare area if needed. The yard I keep my horse is approx 40min drive from Dublin City centre.

What level does she ride at? I can recommend some riding clubs for her to join if she would be interested in that, might be a good way of making friends too

she's shared a horse in Germany for several years so is pretty experienced. Riding clubs are a great idea as she's just moved there with her fiance and doesn't know that many people.... She's only just moved so is trying to get an idea of where the best options are, and ideally would like somewhere you don't have to get to by car as it may be easier to get out of the city centre like that on weekdays.

I currently work in D2 and commute from Kildare each day, outside of peak traffic it's about a 40 min drive to my yard in Kildare. I personally don't know of any yard that would be easily reached by public transport but hopefully someone else might be able to suggest some.

I'm not that familiar with yards around Dublin (there are quite a few around the south of the county and in Wicklow) but Carrickmines Equestrian Centre would be about 20-30 drive.

Most of these places give lessons on their own horses so that might be a good way for her so figure out if she likes a place

Your friend is going to have a very hard time finding yards that are accessible by bus or train in Ireland. I can recommend Brook lodge in Stepaside.I didn't livery at it but I was at a yard right behind it and I always thought they were very nice people. It does a lot of RC events so if she wants to do a bit of competition she won't have to travel. It has an indoor school, I think it has an outdoor and it also has a XC course. The road up to Johnny Fox's can be a bit hair raising for traffic and there is a quarry near by with heavy machinery going up and down but 100 euros buys you a license to hack on the forestry land for a year, which give you miles of off road hacking. It's a busy riding school with lots of kids - that does put some people off.

There is a small private yard right behind Brook Lodge as you go up the mountain but the person who ran it when I was there moved on and I don't know anything about the person running it now, but it might be worth her while checking it out if she is in the area. I had a bad experience with Carrickmines and wouldn't recommend it but it was nearly 10 years ago now so it may have changed, but I would advise her to treat it with caution. If she is in D2 I think she can get a bus to Stepaside and then walk up the mountain to Brook Lodge (takes about 10 to 15 minutes). If the local riders see you in riding gear they often stop to give you a lift!

As far as I remember Brennanstown was trying to become more of a competition yard but its website gives the oppostie impression?

Not as easy to get to - you are looking at a DART to Bray and then a very long walk (three quarters of an hour). I cannot recommend Michelle Toal enough - she runs a small yard with an olympic sized outdoor school near Powerscourt waterfall. It doesn't have off road hacking but the roads around it are very quiet, its really just residents who use them. She is very knowledgable and is a great help and knows just about everyone in the area if you friend is looking to buy. I think she may be doing a bit of buying and selling herself now. However, you really need a car to get to the yard. Its a shame becuase she really is fantastic, I was with her for seven years and only left because we moved to the UK. She might be worth a call though if your friend is looking to buy. She runs the Horse and Country tack shop in Enniskerry, you can find her telephone number if you google the business.

I kept mine at Kill International Equestrian Centre when I lived in Dublin. I drove there but there is a bus from Dublin that stops in Kill and then it is a less than 10 mins walk so may be a possibility. Facilities there are awesome but livery is €175 per week. I was there a fair few years back but standards were very high and the Flannelly family who ran it when I was there still run the yard now. http://www.killinternational.ie/livery.htm

Brooklodge hasn't been a riding school for a few years now! SMC sold it to developers, land yet to be rezoned. It's still a livery yard and has an indoor/outdoor and lunging pen. Steve runs the yard up the road.

I hack out all the time with no problems, but I make sure I am decked out in hiviz/reflective gear on myself and the horse. I also make sure I acknowledge other road users and I stick to the left.

You can get the DART and then the local bus service (Finnegans I think) will drop you right at the gates of Brennantown. Similarly you can get the 145 and it will drop you about a ten minute walk away.

Permit for the forestry is €145 last I checked and you need to provide proof of insurance.
