Having a conversation with a lady last night down the road from my yard, I was out taking my Horse for an in hand walk, she asked what breed she was so I said ISHXTB, she replied that ISH is not a breed so my Horse must be crossed with something else.

Might be a numpty question but are they a breed? :o I've never dealt with one before so have never looked into it.

Ohh ok, Thank you for clearing that up :)

No idea what my mare is then hehe, I can see the TB part but don't know what else.

Some of ours are registered ISHs with full breeding documented in their green passports. We have another who was sold as an ISH which is also seems to be a bit of a "catch all" for ID x TB x whatever when buying from Ireland. I have no complaints, as you will probably have gathered from my user name!

ISH is almost an umbrella term and not always ID x TB - they can be WB x whatever as well.

To have the green passport means that 3 generations are registered already, a white passport would mean no one has a clue! However "normally" it does mean ID x TB..

I think that a blue one means that not all the parents are in the main (green) studbook?

Someone posted it on here once. I have one with a blue passport - he is 1/4 warmblood.

A green one is purer/known breeding, blue is partial, and white is just a passport really. Very brief descriptions there, sorry!

Ahh that makes sense, his sire is Templebready Fear Bui, and his dam ISH so hes part mongrel :)

I would also say it is a type but having had this same discussion with some Americans I mailed the Irish Sports Horse Society and asked them and the reply was that it WAS a breed.
I mailed them back and asked that if it was a breed what were the breed standards?
I have yet to have a reply.

It does seem to be used to cover alot of 'unknown breeding', however it's generally TB X ID or Connie X ID.

It's like saying the tb is a breed but actually it's a man-made "breed" created by crossing arabs with native BREEDS.

So an ISH is a cross between a BREED and a man-made breed. Once establish they do become types I guess but I don't know when that crossover happens and when they become a breed?? Dunno. Too confusing especially when you start going back through history and you find a lot of breeds have had "improvements"...

Like boolavogueDC said - a mongrel - posh nice ones!!!

Traditionally they were an Irish TB x RID, but then the "rules" were relaxed to allow ID x TB, then ID x anything that was a 'sport' breed (Anglo Arab, Selle Francais etc)

IIRC they had to have at least 25% Irish Draught in their bloodlines...

Well they used to, nowadays it seems anything born in Ireland that isn't an RID or Connemara is an ISH

My own bhoy is blue passported ISH: ID x TB X SBS (Belgian Sport Horse, but his sire/dam are SF, and further back the SF's are all from TBs, including Red Rum's Grandsire :D )

They are a crossbreed (from two or more other recognised breeds) as opposed to a mongrel (unknown breeding).

I believe there is an Irish Warmblood registry these days for ISHs who are ID x WB, or ISH x WB

Can I send my ISH passport to the ID society for change of ownership if she has 1/8th ID in her?

Thanks should of changed it yonks ago but can't be bothered to get euros and risk sending it abroad.

If its a change of ownership, its FOC, if its a change of registered name, then there is a small charge. I have never had a problem, simply copied the original passport so I have back up at home and sent the actual passport out by registered post.

Interesting that the ISH say it is a breed but can see why they can't have a breed standard. My previous ISH was actually 5/8 TB (worked out the breeding) but looked more like a near ID. New boy is a "straight" ID x TB and looks more TB. Certain sires (Coevers Diamond Boy as an example) seem to throw heavier offspring.
