Can anyone tell me how horses qualify to be a registered passported sports horse?

My horse has a white irish sports passport but isnt your typical 'sports horse'.

Any horse in Ireland can have an ISH passport :)

That can range from a part bred native to 7/8ths tb to a gypsy cob - or anywhere in between!

when my vet was out she asked what breed Chico was and as i dont knowi said 'he's a heinz 57. What do you think he looks like?' to which she replied 'if you dont know you just call them a sports horse, and as he's coloured probably an Irish Sports horse.' - 'but his mom was from germany!' i said :D:D

A white passport is just a horse registered with the Irish Horse Register that has no recorded breeding

a white passport does not mean the horse is an Irish Sport Horse, just that they are registered with the passport agency

and a fully registered ISH who is on the stud book register too will have a green passport - like mine! She is 7/8th TB ! but has her breeding all the way back to great grandfather in passport - all irish TB x irish draught/irish sports horses. - And using the data i have then traced her all the way back to niijinsky.

Also have to be born in ireland to be registered

My horse is the same as yours, she goes back to Nijinsky. She is by Nero Astaire.

My old riding instructor said that a sports horse is anything with a bit a thoroughbred in (can be a little or a lot) and an Irish Sports Horse is anything Irish (ID, connie, cob) with thoroughbred. :)

It defo doesn't have to be half and half :D

my boy has a blue Irish Sports Horse passport?? and a full breeding history ID/TB - grandsire Sadlers Wells - what is the difference between a green and a blue passport please??

blue usually means only a partial breeding record is held - white means no breeding and so just registered to get a passport and green means full history of breeding

edited to add - sometimes blue of the stallion wasnt an approved registed stallion

shamelessly copied and pasted from somewhere

Horses in the Main Irish horse stud book = green book
Horses in the Supplementary section of the main stud book = blue book
Horses which are registered in the stud book only = white book

Animals must be born into the main stud book.,
i.e. animals with “green mum & green dad” will automatically get a green passport.
Likewise animals with “blue mum & blue dad” will get a blue book.

However there are circumstances where you can breed up, e.g. if you breed a Supplementary mare (blue passport) to a Fully Approved stallion (green passport) and get a filly, while she will get a blue passport, if you cross her to a Fully Approved (green book) sire then at this third generation the resulting foal will get into the main stud book (green passport).

Stallion Classifications
There are three mains sections for stallions:- Fully Approved, S1 and S2.
S1 & S2 are subdivided into Section 1 & 2 and Supplementary 1 & 2.

Fully Approved (Green Passports)
Stallions passed inspection for performance, conformation and soundness.

S1 - Section 1 or Supplementary 1
Stallions who have pasted for soundness but have not reached high enough standard in performance and or conformation. (S1P not a classification, are S1 Stallions recommended for performance testing).

S2 - Section 2 or Supplementary 2
Stallions who have failed their veterinary inspection
or stallions without pedigree.
Section
Section refers to stallions that were born into the IHR Main Studbook.
Supplementary
Supplementary are stallions born outside the IHR Main Stud book.

Passport Classifications
Within the Irish Horse Register there are a number of categories: -
Main Stud Book Green passports
Section A of Main Stud Book Green passports
Section B of Main Stud Book Blue passports
Supplementary section of Main S/B Blue passports
Registration Only White passports
Donkeys Yellow passports
Competition Only Red Passports
(mainly geldings from other studbooks)

Simplified Colour Code
Colours refer to colour of sire and dams’ passports and what colour of passport the resulting foal will get. This is a generalisation and like most things there may be a few exceptions.

Stallion + Mare = Progeny
Green + Green = Green
Green + Blue = Blue
Green + White = Blue
Blue + Blue = Blue
Blue + Green = Blue
Blue + White = White
White + White = White
White + Green = Blue
White + Blue = White

Gosh Kezimac you know your stuff!!
With regards to the comment about Irish breeds having to be in the breeding to get a green passport though - my ISH with a green passport has a TB dam and an OLD x HAN sire, which I assume is Oldenburg x Hanovarian, no Irish breeds in that lot!

Yes & in some instances a horse from another breed can be graded & registered in the ISH book - a stallion that excels in SJ for example

As long as the TB mare has a Weatherbys passport and is registered with the HSI her progeny are eligible for a green passport as long as she is covered with a fully approved stallion irrespective of where she was bred. The sire can be bred abroad and stand abroad as long as he is fully approved by the HSI. As far as I know the only exception is that she can not be covered by a TB, if she is that offspring would have to be registered with Weatherbys.?
