Hi

I wonder if anyone could make some suggestions re iron supplements.

My mare is currently on Ironxcell but I find it's costing me a fortune. She was previously on Haemogen due a virus at the end of 2006 and I've left her on a supplement to keep her ticking over since then. She starts eventing again in March.

Does anyone have any suggestions for iron/B vitamin supplements which don't break the bank? I've heard Guiness is an option but would worry about giving her alcohol every day!

She'd love the Guinness!

Try Kossolian (Day Son & Hewitt make it, about £15 for 3.5kg I think. It's got B12 etc, and is used by trainers as a pick me up. I've used it for years for the brood mares. It certainly won't break the bank if you try a tub or two will it? BTW, any feed merchant should be able to get it easily for you.
Otherwise, there's Brewers Yeast too.

Brewers yeast, guiness are good and cheap. You can also get super malt drink from tescos - Cairo loves a bottle in his feed from time to time.

I had excellent results using red cell - about £26 for 4 month supply for light work/resting so does not break the bank - worked a treat on my old TB following a virus - can be considered to be rocket fuel with some horses.

Thanks everyone. I might give Redcell a go, though she doesn't really need any rocket fuel

. Another option is Equine America's Propell Plus which is the same price - anyone used it?
