my horse saw the vet today (this is a vet who has never seen my horse before and is newly qualified). The vet listened to my horse’s heart and said she has an irregular irregular heartbeat and further tests are needed to determine if it is AF. Now over the last year, my horse has had 4 teeth taken out and sedated each time for these procedures but never has any vet mentioned any issues with her heart. Does anyone know if an irregular heartbeat can just appear?

Don’t know about in horses but mine went funky after a viral infection of my heart so I would guess it can happen in other animals too.

Was this found routinely or did your horse have symptoms?

It can just happen without any heart abnormalities.. I think low potassium can cause it too.

I’m due to relocate and she was having a blood test done as part of the yard I’m going to requirements and the vet checked her over before bloods were taken. She hasn’t had any symptoms

Have you listened to her heart or felt the pulse yourself? An irregularly irregular pulse is very easy to feel.. It just doesn't happen when you expect a beat, nor is there any pattern to it.
I would get a second opinion too, especially if the pulse feels regular to you.

I'd be getting a 2nd opinion before escalating this x

Yes, me too. We had a similar experience with a young vet and a retired cob. Then vet qualified dentist thought there was no problem, so I got senior vet out who couldn't find a problem either - he explained it by saying horse must have had a virus at the time of the first test. I certainly hadn't noticed any problem with her health.

However I once had my heart listened to by a young doctor, who noticed a problem, GP couldn't hear anything but sent me to hospital for a test. I saw the scan(?) results and there was an irregularity. Fortunately all agreed that it was harmless and didn't need intervention .
