Irresponsible Breeding?? Rant

I think you are totally right in someways. ALthough i dont agree you should have to know there breeding as i currently have a mare who could be a potential 138 SJ but has 0 breeding i have been told to put her in foal as she has great conformation. Although in reality i think the pony would really dislike having a foal as she is just one of those 138 types lol

My friend has one of those dna tested coloured wb's just not sure if he'll be too big she's only 14.2 currently rising 4 will probably mature big 14.3 / 15h so my reckoning would be that nything over 16h would possibly be too big for her

I think what you are saying is very valid but considering the thread in CR the other day there are not many people prepared to put up with ' sensitivity' a lot of people who discover their horses need too much work move them on. I think its fine if you can offer a foal from a favourite mare a home for life but not many of us can as circumstances change and why keep churning out trickier horses when there are so many that are well bred talented and trainable ie the full package.

Thing is, we've sort of accidentally ended up with a very well bred mare through buying her at a dealers as our first horse (!) so seeing as we've had no broken bones in our first year of owning her, straight off RS horses, and my riding improved 100fold through learning that unless my hands and seat were perfect, she would act out, I think conversely, she's a very sympathetic mare who just has moments of exuberance - there is not a bit of malice in her and in a way I think it would be a shame NOT to breed from her on account of her zest for life when horses put together like spare parts of jigsaw puzzles are bred for their colour...

My maiden was a 15.1 TB AI'd to a 16.2hh coloured WB. Offspring is now 18 months old and stands a good 15.2hh. My mare's sire was 16.3hh so I guess that's where the height has come from.

I believe (within reason) that a mare's uterous limits the size of the foal in-utero. Not that I would condone crossing a Shire with a Shetland, but I'd think a 14.3 - 15 hh mare should accommodate the foal of a 16.1hh stallion okay. My mare was AI'd as she disliked the stallion and would not stand for him. Not because she could not be physically covered by him BTW!

Gosh yes zest for life is no problem I was thinking more the terminally difficult horses that no-one wants.

Hmmmm don't get me started on people that want to confine breeding to only certain mares and certain stallions. Well thats one reason why decent irish draught stallions can hardly be found now-they've been bred out. All ireland really had was the diamond, cruising, cloverhill lines which are pretty much exhausted now. Not totally.. but we're getting there. I really really hate it when people call Cavalier irish!!Since when has a bloody holsteiner been irish??

In my opinion, the more genes left in the pool, the better or else we'll end up interbreeding. Recently saw a horse for sale with cloverhill on BOTH sides!!eek!!

In holland its the same, look back far enough, and you'll find the same old names coming up..
My sister lives there, and she tells me it's shocking how much degenerative bone disease etc there is, it makes you very nervous of buying a warmblood..

Our broodmare has a pretty fiery temperament, but brilliant jumping ability so we took that into account and chose a lovely sane draught horse. It worked, all our horses are easy enough to look after (in fact ruddy lazy lol)

I don't believe in breeding from very poor conformation, but minor defects can be helped by the stallion's side.

Hate people that breed herds of foals just to find a "superstar". Lets face it, plenty of bad horses come from "the best bloodlines" Most top horses are freaks!just as common as geniuses among humans lol

My advice to anyone wanting to breed from their mare is, will she produce a foal that you would want to keep?If so do ur homework and pick the best stallion for her. If not, don't bother!
