Irresponsible Owners

Everything accomplished, I nipped into Jollys with him to get him some lamb braids to make up for his crap life a bit, and the little sod cocked his leg on the corner of a pallet.

I could have died. I apologised, offered to clean up and I honestly think nobody believed me when I said it was the first time in his 11 years he had done something so antisocial.

One of mine did this in Pets at Home. I was mortified! I used to take Bear in there all the time, never had an issue. I apologised and asked for someth8ng to clean it up, the staff thanked me for telling them, people usually don’t, apparently!
 
I was disgusted and concerned to read on a local Facebook dog site today that a woman was hoping anybody who had seen her and her family walking 2 dogs in the heat today wouldn't judge her/them. One dog, who was 14 and had been ill for a long time was going to the vets to be PTS, so needed one final walk before being cuddled to sleep. It apparently was OK to walk in the heat due to the fact dog had been ill for so long and was being pts but needed to have one last walk before lots of treats etc etc.

Not one person seemed to think this was wrong. I think it's bloody appalling and no I have not posted at all.

Where did it all go so wrong? I don't recollect this sort of thing years ago. My mum just took them to the vets when they were failing... And I tend to do it before they are!
 
It's like that Walnut whippet at the beach a few years ago. Completely inappropriate and not within the dogs best interest.

I also saw a video once of a border collie who was being allowed to herd sheep one last time. It had some sort of muscle wastage of its back end and was ridiculously lame. It was an appalling watch.

I wonder just how hot it was, hasn't been quite so bad recently and how far they were walking it. Also just how bad it was. When i was taking mum's little dog to be put down she got so excited when I picked up her lead and towed me out of the house. I saw my brother and told him to say goodbye to her. It was had to believe she was ready to be pts she was so bouncy. She was so skinny and wobbly but would have happily gone for a short walk. Without knowing the dog in this case and just what was wrong with it I would hesitate to criticize. The last of my own dogs that had to be pts with throat cancer was taken for her walk on the day before she was pts. Travelled by car to the playing field she liked and just had a wander round. She didn't want to get back in the car but it was raining and I had to go to work. Always wished I had given her longer out.
 
Saw a family today with their 2 children in the play area in my local park, their Black and Tan spaniel was tied to the fence in the sun and was getting itself very wound up and obviously its family were not close. He/she was barking continually and jumping up and down.. I was a bit late and was walking mine in the shade and it was still hot. The dog didn’t even have a bowl of water , I had to walk over and suggest they tie it in the shade plus give it some water… I was not popular…

I think you did the right thing.

I was at a supermarket yesterday. There was a jrt barking continuously in a car, windows were all rolled down, it was quite cool (I’m up north) so I don’t think it was too warm in the car, but I don’t understand why you’d bring your dog to the supermarket. I spent 30 minutes in there, car was leaving as I left.
 
Barking aside, I go to the supermarket on the way to and from places all the time when the dog is in the car. For example on Tuesday I had to go up home for a meal so I took her for the run, I called into Tesco and got wine and dessert. Sunday I was at training all day and then I needed to get a few groceries for this week so I stopped on the way home. Wouldn't be spending 30 minutes there, though. When I am getting a dog used to short journeys in the car, in they go, pop to Tesco, they wait in the car for ten minutes, we go home again. That also helps avoid nuisance barking and crazy behaviour in the car, IE, just because you get in the car doesn't mean you are going to the beach or the forest so no need to lose your cool.

Same here. I don't normally take the dogs to the supermarket, but occasionally stop on the way to or from somewhere with the dogs. If I was traveling with someone, one of us would stay with the dogs, but I'm normally on my own, so they just have to wait a few minutes. Over here in France, it seems to be quite the in thing to have solar panel shelters on supermarket car park now, which at least gives plenty of shade. Dogs also have water bowls in their crates.
 
I've driven all over UK and IRL, to NL, DE, DK and IT with dogs, they've had to survive me popping into supermarkets, going out to eat etc. One was fine crated in accommodation when I went out for short periods but the other always preferred to stay in the vehicle.

It's funny, dog didn't actually appear distressed, listened when I said hello, what a good boy etc. I think some dogs just like to make themselves heard.

Mine get a bit excited if we go past the woods but then calm down once we get to the pub 😂 Without fail, they have a little run before going to the pub. I think it's important for them to be used to being in the car. I might pop to buy milk en route from somewhere or to shove a parcel in the Inpost lockers.
 
Mine are often in the car when I pop into the local shop after I’ve walked them. However I haven’t done it recently as it’s been too warm IMO and I can never know if I will be 2 mins or 10 so although it’s a pain I bring mine home and then pop back to the shop/chemist..
 
Mine very seldom get left in the car. Maybe when the farrier comes but thats about it.

Not that I have any problem with it. Im just a real anxious weirdo and the intrusive thoughts have me believing someone is going to smash the window and steal them.

So not irresponsible then!
 
Apart from anything else, on a long journey I need be able to leave them in the car to go for a wee. Although as I found out on a 32c day when I really couldn't leave him in the car, Moto services allow solo travellers to take dogs to the loo with them.

My family is generally unpopular in relation to dogs at the moment.

I found Fat Aussie wandering on the road outside of my house again. I grabbed her and took the time to cut the worst of the matting off her before taking her home. She's actually short tailed, I thought she was half tailed, but it turns out the rest is matting.
I took her home and had words with her owners. I was polite: they are nice people, just cr@p dog owners. I told them that they were going to kill her, letting her be obese and wander about in the heat. I also pointed out their legal responsibilities if she injured anyone (which can include a hefty fine and prison over here in France). And that I didn't want Fat Aussie to get hurt or for them to get into trouble. It may have worked, at least temporarily, I haven't seen her out since.

Mum had words with another neighbouring couple whose Fat Lab barks for hours on end. Neighbours weren't impressed and said it was because people and dogs were going by on the road. But mum pointed out that that doesn't really bother her (it's not very busy around here), it's the barking non stop without an obvious reason that's driving her crazy. The neighbours don't seem to hear or care that their dog is barking. Fat Lab was barking for 15min stood next to his owner who was replacing the tiles the dog keeps knocking off their garden wall.

I don't think endless barking is the usual sign of a contented dog. It was barking endlessly until I spoke to him/her. Immediately started up again when I walked away. I don't think leaving a dog for at least 30 minutes is something I'd do. Maybe he/she would have been worse at home alone. Maybe the owner had a really good reason for leaving him/her. Dunno, didn't hang around to ask.

That's really handy to know. Sometimes it's tricky to find a parking space I'd consider 'safe' although mine tend to immediately lie down and nap, plus the back windows/boot are tinted (not by me!) so hopefully decent cover. Often the loos are busy, it can take a little minute to get there and back.
 
Came across a young woman this morning who walking a black lab on lead today whilst I was out riding my bike.

I was approaching her from behind on a narrow single track road. I first dinged my bell as a polite warning when I was 100 yards behind, then again at 50 yards plus a call out of ‘Hi, cyclist behind!’ - no reaction. Then again at 20 yards behind when I bellowed another verbal warning.

She jumped out of her skin, removed her headphones and told me she couldn’t hear me because she had her headphones in 🙈.

Lab was unbothered, but to be walking in the middle of a through road when you are utterly unaware of traffic behind you is nuts. I’d never have just barrelled past her, and was doing my best to let her know I was there, but I just thought what an idiot you are.

Absolutely this . So many cyclists sneak up on me when I’m walking , causing me and the dogs to jump . I always thank the few who do ring bells or call out .
 
It is compulsory for all new cycles to be fitted with a bell at the point of sale.

Unfortunately there is no ongoing requirement to keep the bell on the bike or ever use it.

I start doing a polite ‘ting’ from about 100 yards out, which is usually enough to alert most people to my presence without frightening the sh1t out of them 🙂.
 
There’s the odd day in summer when I go out to the supermarket without the dogs usually they are with us .
They lie in car with the sun roof open.
If it’s too hot mrGs sits on the tailgate .
I usually can find better things to do than buy food on a nice day .
I can manage a big shop in less than fifteen minutes.
