Irresponsible Owners

We took 4 Labs to the beach yesterday. They had a great time, although Daycare Dog isn't a fan of getting wet above her ankles.

However despite an almost deserted beach and our dogs being under close control while playing with balls, we still had 2 incidents of numpty owners allowing their dogs to approach ours.

The young Border Collie followed its own ball, thrown by owner into the middle of ours who were all sitting down and snapped at our brown one, fortunately none of ours took up the challenge, although brown one pulled her lead out of my hand. But she was more interested in the ball than anything else.
Owner kept saying "It doesn't matter", tbh, we ignored her.

Then a dish mop dog approached with absolutely no intervention by its owner. My sister gowled "No!" at it and it decided upon discretion.

Why are people so unconcerned about their own dog's safety?
It never fails to amaze me how unconcerned other owners are. We grabbed our two away from a GSD yesterday. They have zero sense of self preservation and I always check if it’s ok to leave them off lead in the woods.
I really have no idea!!!

I have been away camping. On one site I couldn't find a water tap so asked a couple who were sitting outside their van. My dog was standing by my side on a short lead a good distance from their Akita that was asleep. They were very pleasant and chatty but immediately warned me not to let my dog go near theirs. Errr, I can't imagine who would think it a good idea to let their dog disturb a sleeping Akita.

Unless it was the people who I met whilst sitting outside a harbourside bar the next day who were determined to introduce their 2 JRs to mine. My saying it wasn't a good idea was ignored, but quickly put to the test when in an effort to wrench mine away from their advancing dogs, I slipped off my seat and ungracefully landed on the floor, which caused a huge amount of concern from all bystanders who had clearly never come off a horse, as I must at least have broken a hip. I was proved right apparently, as a bit of growling went on when I was retrieving myself from the floor. Hfffff, just why do people think dogs have to say hello??
No idea, they seem very unbothered in most cases. Lady with other springer was totally unconcerned that hers didn’t want to make friends with mine today. They’ve met before, it’s a student from school who owns it, his mum was walking it today. I was happy to say a quick hi and move on. Don’t even think she clocked it growling as I hauled my two past.

We happened across a badger this morning.

It literally ran at us and noticed us when we were all but 2ft away from it.

Okay, mine were all on leads so we probably don't entirely meet the irresponsible owner narrative.

That said, all three of mine temporarily lost their minds at what was apparently a 'black and white demon puppy' and I could all but hang on and laugh while they turned into a trio of whirling dervish.

The GSD x, of course, could be quickly commanded back to reality.

The two sighthounds....not so much.

I would not be surprised if they have experience of people disturbing a sleeping Akita.
We used to find when we had 2 Rottweilers, who always wore fig8 leads over their noses , which some people thought were muzzles, as well as harnesses, that even when they were sitting being good by our feet while we were eating, some fools let their dogs come to ours. Fortunately they were very even-tempered. Some people are just idiotic.

Cooper used to lay in his basket on my bit of grass outside the boat. I lost track of the amount of idiots that let their dog come off the tow path and come up to him, with some even getting in the basket with him. Hes completely dog neutral thankfully, but they didnt know that, also, just NO! Keep ypur sodding dog off my grass and off my dog!

I don't know what to say when someone's off lead dog comes running out of their garden, onto the street, and gets right in the faces of my two. The owner said, "sorry" as his Poodle stood growling and barking nose to nose with mine as I kept attempting to walk away. He would not get out of their faces. The polite and dumb me wanted to say, "it's alright" in response to his "sorry" but it's not alright. The other me would've just been a d*ck, so I said nothing. Their house is for sale and they're moving soon, so good riddance, I guess.

This one has really wound me up.....

Loki (my 2 year old Weimaraner) can be a knob with recall so I leave him on a lovely long lead, which means he can run around to his heart's content, we can practise recall and everyone stays safe when I take him into a big field just down the road from us. He does have a small amount of recall, but when the adrenaline gets pumping, he looses all brain function and becomes a 30kg furry pain in the ass - so for everyone's sake, safety and sanity, I keep him on a mega long line that way I always have a hold of him and can keep control of him.

For the love of all things holy - someone please tell me what would posses someone to come over to my dog (they very loosely know my dogs and I, but merely on a polite "good morning" basis whilst walking them!) and then let him off the lead?!?!?! All without talking to either one of us, or asking permission to touch him!!!!

Of course carnage ensued as I'm desperately trying to keep calm and collected to get Loki to come back to me, praying that he doesn't go and pester another dog therefore causing an incident and also trying not to throttle said twat of a person who caused all this in the first place! Credit where credit is due, Loki came back really quickly so I lavished lots of praise and cuddles on him, to which the idiot who walked over said "See his recall is perfectly fine - you need to lighten up and let the dog live a little".

Now I'm normally able to hold my tongue and be quite eloquent with my vocabulary, but I just saw red and went ape at the person - something along the lines of "The whole reason why I have the long lead is safety for everyone you bloody idiot. Loki does not have the best recall skills when his adrenaline gets up and once that happens, I'm generally f****d as he won't listen to a damn thing or anyone! You could have caused a serious accident by your stupid measures - and what on earth gives you the right to walk over to my dog, when you can clearly see I'm training him, interfere, cause a disruption to everyone else using the field and then act ok? Newsflash - it isn't ok! I've seen dogs throats ripped open by other dogs because lack of recall has caused a fight to break out!! If you ever touch my dog again without my express permission, I will rain down on you like the Holy Ghost. Now bugger off out my sight so I can attempt to continue training my dog."

I did get an apology out of the person, and they came round to my house later on with a box of chocolates and some treats for the dogs - which I thanked them for - but even so - it could have been so much worse :(

The person has several of their own dogs, all with no training and they let them run wild and cause carnage without so much an offering to help sort any incidents that their dogs cause out.......

I'm not clear on what happened - it's all so long

I was training my dog on his longline as his recall needs some work, someone came over and let him off without speaking to me or asking permission to touch him and they could have caused a nasty accident to happen. Normally I keep my cool but I lost it and used a few choice words.....

We had plenty of idiots suggesting that we should let the Rotts off lead to "play with my dog"
They didn't understand the the Rotts weren't interested in their blasted dog. They would have taken off after the resident wildlife, caught the scent of the sheep and goats that lived nearby, shot into the road and got squashed.

I appreciated the storytelling APL1996!! 😂

Story itself is batshit. Where do people get the nerve? 😱

When I get wound up I tend to ramble - hence the mini essay - but glad you enjoyed it aha 🤣🤣

Oh I know right! The other day someone was struggling with their dog, I asked them what would be best to do, so that the situation didn't get any more difficult for them (leave the field or stay where I was etc) and they were ever so thankful that I asked their opinion - it resulted in a lovely experience for everyone involved and took less than a minute!

Talking of shit, some sheep have been put out on what is normally a circular route that can be started from either end, meaning that many who use it are now doing an out and back on one shorter bit to avoid the sheep. The amount of concentrated shit that's accumulated after just a few days of doubling up the route is absolutely disgusting.

This morning I had gone to the side of the path to give my dogs a drink, all were on lead and quietly drinking when a woman came along with one dog on lead and one off , they all walked right up to me even though my little terrier started barking, I asked her to keep away as one of mine wasn’t friendly so she walked away with the on lead dog and just kept calling the other one who was busy trying to get to my terrier. I am afraid it got a little bit of help with my foot to encourage it to go away, owner still pathetically calling the bloomin thing… 😡😡😡

There’s an amazing invention that prevents sheep worrying, these people should invest in one. (And in a poo bag perhaps).

Off lead at all costs mentality, they want to unclip the lead at the gate and not have to consider interacting with their dog at any point thereafter (sadly also extending to picking up their shit).

I do feel a bit beleaguered by sheep at the moment, poor dog having been worried by hungry sheep last week there’s now a very stinky dead one behind the paddock I use at work. It was a hot day. 🤢

Eventful walks continue. Yesterday a small terrier shot out of a housing estate and towards the main road, I tried whistling and calling him but he was in a flat out panicked bolt (and I had mine with me in any case). He made it to the road before I did but somehow the oncoming cars spotted him and stopped, some got out to try and go after him but he wasn't stopping for anyone. He was heading for the high street which was heaving with people so we figured he'd get stopped there, a few minutes later he passed me again running back in the direction he came from, again nobody managed to head him off. Sadly I see today that he's still missing despite having been headed for home last he was seen.

Weather hotting up, look out for elderly, obese, lame, ungroomed and out of control dogs, coming to all outside spaces near you!
Local walking group put up details of 5 mile walk this Saturday , starts 1pm , max temp forecast 29 . Someone has asked if their 32 kg retriever would manage the stiles 🙄
