Irresponsible Owners

We just had a terrier run up behind us out of nowhere, maybe got loose from someone's front door, and come charging at us barking. I fended it off as thought it may well go in for a bite. Thankfully it did stop when I told it and the owner soon appeared to call it back.

Turned back around to walk on and heard the thunk of it being whacked. Except no, because OH saw it and what I heard was it being kicked.

I met the same lady yesterday morning and asked where her lovely Border Collie was - she looked at me with tears in her eyes and told me that it had gotten attacked by a pack of dogs and was currently fighting for its life in the emergency vets. I gave her a hug and told her that I really hope her dog pulls through and she said that her husband gave her one hell of a lecture about what she was doing with it, and how if the dog dies he is leaving her as he can't handle her lack of responsibility - I must admit I actually feel really sorry for her.......

Yes they are stupid and ball throwers are now a tool to keep a type of tenuous control of dogs .
It’s completely normal now to walk along the beach throwing balls amongst other people and dogs not even small children playing stops them.
There’s a small park opposite the new house it’s the only place in the village what closed to dogs some parents will watch their kids with the dog on the beach on the other side of a low wall however the rules clearly don’t apply for all .
There’s miles of beach hills and footpaths there’s no excuse.

Unfortunately this is exactly what she did.....the dog has thankfully by some miracle pulled through, but it will be one hell of a recovery.

The dog isn't insured so she's paying for it all out of her own pocket and has said to her husband, that even though the dog made it through, if he wishes to leave her, she understands and will leave the dog with him, but carry on paying all bills until the dog has fully recovered. Her husband has said that they'll talk about it when she gets home.

Well it’s a radical learning curve but tbh I assume she’s totally fricking stupid. Shame it took such an extreme solution. I actually feel sorry for the person who owned the dogs that attacked it. I don’t think mine would do a lot of damage but there would be a fight if that happened.

After all that the rain came a good four hours later than forecast so we could have all spread out a bit more anyway. It just looked so stressful, the dogs were off for maybe 50m a time before they had to do it all over again, and at least one whippet got trodden on judging by the scream.

I haven't been to Cannock Chase since our racing days and this does not entice me back. 😒
 
I might be speaking out of turn but is it possible collie lady has more going on than you're aware of? Plenty of people are idiots when it comes to dogs (see whole thread documenting this!) but that really is a spectacular lack of common sense and good judgment, and also way more information than would normally be shared with a stranger.

I've been quietly thinking for a while she might have something going on - hence why I was politer than I would have usually been when we had our unscheduled interaction when I had Loki x

Whilst I do think she is rather daft, underneath it all she seems to be a lovely person, as she's never had a bad thing to say about Loki/Sid (my Mum's dog) and has (up until now) always been really bubbly and perky........even when I was a bit blunt when the ambush happened, she still was perky and bubbly x

I gave her my phone number when the incident happened as I thought she might like to walk her dog with Loki, and I've known her for a few years but nothing much past the usual pleasantries when walking the dogs x I also thought that if I gave her my mobile number, she'd be less inclined to carry on letting her dog ambush others and was hoping that a situation like her dog getting attacked could be avoided x
 
I've spoken before of the woman with the collie who lets it nip behind her/behind the person/dog who has just passed them to bite their legs/attack from behind. She's never told it off or raised her voice to it (she's usually on the phone). I have.
I did shout at her once that my old dog didn't need the stress, the last time it happened, and she puts it on a lead when she sees me coming now. Her Dad is my best friend's Dad's best friend, if that makes sense.
If you've got a dog like that, go and work it on sheep or do agility with it or something, stop letting it piss off other dogs and people and end up with a huge vet bill. The only reason hers is alive/unscathed (and mine is dead), is because I had him on a bloody lead and never let him have a go back.

I mean, yes, the sheer stupidity is very strong with this one, but poor bloody dog and both owners. I hope it doesn’t turn out like Zak after being attacked, he was dreadful with other dogs afterwards, obviously wired a bit strangely, I’ve seen other dogs undergo worse and still be resilient and fine.

See someone coming through an underpass with a GSD, or some rough description of one, rendered in crayon. Was prancing on toes and tail over back like a scorpion.
I reverse out of tunnel, pop a cord collar over her head, step off the path and start feeding her.
Bloke then stops *right in front of us with his dog*.

And says...

HE'S FRIENDLY.

Me, wrestling with small angry racing snake, with bits of kibble flying everywhere: 'MINE ISN'T'

Him: Oh, isn't she?

Continues to pass by at a glacial pace, stopping to stare every couple of steps..

I mean I think I know what he was trying to do, but if I want to do the whole gradual exposure thing I'll do it with a plan, and the dog of my choosing.

Or he was just genuinely A Man Being Dumb (Edit: Or showing me How Great HIS Dog Is).

I shouldn't have laughed at this but your description of the incident was so good. You managed to make the bane of a shepherd's owner's life sound funny. Erm,do snakes race?? If they DO have snake races im entering my young bitch!! I've got a new insult for her the next time she tracks so fast we miss ALL the corners!!
 
Horse and I sauntering down a woodland trail. A lurcher thing pops out of the woods, no owner in sight. Dog eyeballs us, and I stop horse, brandish my dressage whip, and yell, "IF YOU F78979ING COME AFTER US, I WILL MOTHERF77867KING KILL YOU!!!!" Dog reconsiders its life choices, decides we are too psychotic to be prey, and from somewhere deep in the woods, out of sight, I hear someone frantically calling to it. I continue on my way.

If I could not see owner, they couldn't see me, so would not have known there was a horse. All they would have heard was some lunatic screaming invective at their dog, sounding like Malcolm Tucker on crack.
 
I've been in Florida for the last two weeks, and I can't tell you the sheer number of 'service dogs' I saw out and about at the theme parks. It was, on average, around 32 degrees every day with 90% humidity. Some dogs had shoes on, most didn't. Even saw one go on the Haunted mansion ride...
Service dogs are great but shouldn't be subjected to those temperatures/that number of people - stay at home, you don't need to go to Disney!

It can't be easy if you need a service dog and live in a place where the temperatures are not dog friendly for a good part of the year, but yes, perhaps take a human companion to Disney instead, they're a lot more likely to enjoy it!
Perhaps there's a market for heat and humidity loving species as service animals? Some kind of jungle marsupial perhaps? Or maybe just a service crocodile? That would clear the queues for you !

Ha, brilliant!

The amount of times I was told this, drove me fricking nuts. Bloke with a collie let her off as I was crossing a narrow footbridge across the river. I put Zak on the inside but it was big dog who had a pop, he wasn’t keen on being flown at when on lead. People are stupid.

That’s wild! I think in might’ve reported that to the police - you’re just right that 1 wrong move by anyone could’ve gone horribly wrong, surely that would class as dangerous driving.
 
Charged at by a bristling, growling chocolate lab yesterday that was carrying a thick, 4ft-ish branch such that even I flinched thinking it was about to wipe me out. Large dog sent it packing and then immediately simmered down, which was very gratifying. However instead of taking that opportunity to put it on a lead, the owner continued towards us so it could do it a second time, and pretended not to hear me. 🙄

Thinking about it I could write an entry on this thread every week which is mad considering that most days we only do one ‘public’ walk.

Me too🤣🤣. Last week on holiday, I was minding own business, sat on a seat in a fairly empty market square. Dog who had walked probably 5 miles asleep beside me. Man made sure he was towed over towards us with some sort of bull type telling it not to be so nosey. It got to our bench, I was horrified and scooped up sleeping dog with a plea to just leave us alone. This upset him and he said his dog was very friendly and only wanted to say hello, I said mine didn't at which point he told me to just eff off then, several times 😮🤣🤣🤣. Just why???

This week I had the pleasure of a Goldie and a lab crowding round me and my on lead dog. Its ok, their friendly, they just wasn't to play 🙄🙄🙄.
 
Had a 😬 moment today. Tried a new walk which was actually a decent shorter circular route which I want to find for winter.
Had both mine on leads as there were signs going onto the path asking for dogs to be kept on leads but also
I didn’t know the route and usually keep Bert on a lead in public anyway as he can and has been funny with other dogs.
Saw ahead a lady with a spaniel and collie both off lead. She saw me and stopped, I assumed putting leads on hers so I held back to give her time as it was a narrow path.
She carried on towards me and I thought they were on leads until the Collie came tearing over actually growling.
She did have a lead on the spaniel who seemed very unbothered by us. She feebly called it back and shouted to me were my dogs friendly and ok with him, to which I replied no, one doesn’t like unknown dogs, call him back.
She had absolutely zero control at all.
I almost wanted B to lunge and bark just to scare her but obviously was glad he didn’t really.
