Irresponsible Owners

Is "and I just want to say duck off" a good stock answer?
Or "Mine isn't friendly and neither am I?"
I’ve come so close so getting really shitty with people. When I first moved here I was told by a few people
In the village to watch out for a really nasty chocolate Lab and equally nasty owner.
I now wonder if that guy and his dog were simply not wanting everyone else’s dog to play 😩

Hello! I’m new 🫢 you may want to include me as irresponsible owner but I promise I’m not it really was an accident, I tripped over at the weekend and lost hold of my terrier who took off and had a go at another dog. I’m heartbroken. The other dog wasn’t injured and now I have a muzzle for my little arsehole. I felt so so bad!

You sound the opposite of an irresponsible owner. You couldn't help tripping over, no harm was done and your dog is now muzzled. Stop beating yourself up.

""Thinking about it I could write an entry on this thread every week which is mad considering that most days we only do one ‘public’ walk""

Me too🤣🤣. Last week on holiday, I was minding own business, sat on a seat in a fairly empty market square. Dog who had walked probably 5 miles asleep beside me. Man made sure he was towed over towards us with some sort of bull type telling it not to be so nosey. It got to our bench, I was horrified and scooped up sleeping dog with a plea to just leave us alone. This upset him and he said his dog was very friendly and only wanted to say hello, I said mine didn't at which point he told me to just eff off then, several times 😮🤣🤣🤣. Just why???

This week I had the pleasure of a Goldie and a lab crowding round me and my on lead dog. Its ok, their friendly, they just wasn't to play 🙄🙄🙄.
😱 Wtf?! You got told off because you were protecting his dog?? People are crazy, I swear.

Er no, I was simply moving out of his way really, as his dog had made a bee line for us. I don't think his dog, a large bull breed type, would have needed protecting against my 11yo tired 9kg terrier! That is why I moved.

That would be me. After the whole covid puppy thing I lost my final strands of tolerance with irresponsible entitled "fur parents". Strangely previously there used to be certain breeds who seemed to be owned by idiots and I kept a closer eye on,but now, pretty much every recent nasty incident, such as actually having to beat off an attacking dog on my own front path, has been caused by these poodle mongrel types. Now I have a lot of time for poodles, spaniels and labradors as breeds and am intrigued as to why crossbreds and mongrels of these breeds are quite so flipping horrible!!
I keep telling myself it's the owners it's the owners........

I like to think it's the owners, I have a spaniel cross and she is a delight. I hate to say it because I love them, but all the idiots in my neck of the woods seem to have beagles that surprise surprise they can't recall.

There’s also a lady in our village with two dogs, both of which run up to our horses legs when riding. They are loose on the road and she’s always very apologetic. I said to her once “no worries I’m just concerned because mine will kick”
She replied maybe that will teach them to come back then 😂 they don’t seem to know their own names

Seriously!!! wtf and you let them loose on the road!

Nb- the laughing her not me!

At least horses come slowly round the corner, we have some courier vans that appear to be ralley driving round here. Poor little sods wouldn’t stand a chance

She’s mad, putting them at risk like that. Even if we park right outside where we walk, dogs go on the lead. What happens if the dogs cause an accident? Hope she’s got public liability!

Very much doubt it. It used to scare me at first but I realised they are not nasty just totally clueless around horses (why wouldn’t they be) and my old horse didn’t care. I’ve now got a bit more twitchy Because I’d not swear this one won’t kick and I don’t want a dead dog even if she isn’t bothered.
It’s just weird.
Mine are not allowed to get out of the car without leads and they learned that really quickly and easily, and I’m a crap trainer!

Mine have always been taught to wait in the boot, we sometimes have to park on busy roads. We had to teach bil’s dogs when we dog sat.

If they’d flown at Beau, he’d have stamped on their heads, he really hated dogs. 😱

A lot of horses would, or would panic. Even an accidental step on a paw could be horrendous

Last night, there was meeting at the Riding school for the association. One of the riders came a along with a puppy.
Puppy is the planned offspring of her border collie and another rider's Australian shepherd. As far as I'm aware, neither dog is health tested. So, being me, I asked if I could say hi to the puppy, what's her name, etc..
The answer: she's the puppy I'm keeping from the litter for breeding. Oh, and she's the most nervous one of the litter. That's why the owner brought her along to a meeting because "She has to get used to it". Whilst I agree that that puppies need socialising, I don't agree with throwing them in the deep end, and every time anyone said puppy's looking nervous or there's a lot going on for her, the answer was "She's got to get used to it". No positive associations (food, cuddles) in sight.
I also asked why she was keeping this particular puppy for breeding if she was the most nervous of the litter. Well she's the only merle female and she wants to produce merles because no one wants black and whites. I did point out that you can't cross two merles so you'll always have non merles in the litter and she could have kept another one and crossed out to a merle. She quickly back tracked and said she wanted to add some tricolour because people still like them better than black and whites. She also mentioned border collie / aussies where now a new breed and her puppies were going to be some of the first registered. I'll be checking that out, but I seriously doubt that the register will be part of any of the official bodies in France.
Last thing, puppy has a very pink nose! I did wish her good luck with that, and told her having had a dog with a pink nose before, never again for me.

I despair of people and their lack of basic research and common sense before breeding!

Passed a woman with a beagle on a lane today. Mine were in a heel as we passed, beagle lunged across the lead at end of lead barking at them. She said “ooh what’s that about” and other things the dog wouldn’t understand. Fairly sure I’ve passed her before, somewhere else, and it did the same.

Passed her again later on the same walk on a footpath along a field boundary - took mine well away off the path, in a heel, to pass her. She said “oh did we pass you before?” I said “yes that’s why I’m giving her some space” and she looked mortally offended, and said “she doesn’t have any harm in her, she was just barking, that’s their language”. I couldn’t even be arsed to try and explain that barking and lunging is reactivity and I’d rather not risk her getting close enough to mine to find out whether it bites as well, I just give up with people 😩

I had a real 'Doh!' moment this morning.

Went on a local walk with all three which I seldom do. We usually walk in remote areas to avoid all others.

Anyway, its 5am ish so dark out. My reactive starts threating. There is a man walking towards us. He has no dog so im perplexed why she is reacting and can only assume she thinks he may have a dog.

So I cross the road.

Straight into a man walking his Golden. Oops!

So while my dog is asking for more space, I accidentally create much much less.

Lesson learnt. Take a head torch.

So lunch time today will be separate walks for the dogs locally, reinforcing positive associations so we don't end the day on a negative note around other dogs.

Well I for one am pleased your dog growled. A man walking by himself at 5am is …..suspicious if you ask me! Well done doggo!

Sorry Parrotperson, have to disagree with you…where I live, or I should say close by, lots of men and indeed women are walking to work at that time, the factories near me have shifts starting really early, the buses don’t run that early…
Not only factories, but airports and events….
Not everyone can afford a car

Fair do’s. But I’ve never lived anywhere that happens. So it would worry me!

Just to clarify, she was reacting to the dog that I could not see that was on the other side of the road. She wasn't reacting to the people.

She likes all people. She thinks they are fantastic.
