Irresponsible Owners

Some people just have a blind spot where their own dogs are concerned

I was in the feed shop recently, carrying a 20kg sack and came round a corner to find the passage blocked by a huge something or other dog - not at all aggressive or frightening, just completely in the way
I pulled up sharpish and the woman said Oh don't you like dogs? in an amused/patronising voice

I think the issue here was that the dog owner stood behind somebody already in a queue who was no doubt not expecting to have a dog standing behind him. I think the person with the dog should have moved away.

Sorry, it was sitting!

I just got bitten by a neighbour's sodding dog. I was faffing about loading the car up and the damn thing came at me from behind and bit me, I didnt even know it was there. Ripped a hole in my trousers and drew blood. I managed to scream and shout and keep it back long enough to get into my neighbour's garden, but it was growling and stalking me the whole time. Got in the neighbour's garden as they have a tall fence, and then we were all stuck. Every time I opened the gate it came at us. I rang my landlord to ring the owner as I didnt have her number and she apparently couldnt hear us shouting her.

And then the kids came and were planning to play just outside the main gate of our bit. So I grabbed a sweeping brush and went to be a, very unwilling, hero. Thankfully I kept it back from me for a few seconds and the damn owner turned up and locked them in a car.

I'm furious. It hurt! But its mainly what could have happened. I stood my ground and kept it back, I doubt the 8yr old boys would have done that and if they had ran it would have had them. I was bloody terrified going out of that gate again, but they were about 50yds away and I wanted to get between them and the dog as it was darting back and forth and the kids hadnt noticed it. I've never been more relieved to see an owner in my life. I'm not cut out for heroic acts like that. I have no idea what my plan was other than belting it with the brush and keeping it back. I probably didnt think it all the way through. I just didnt want kids being hurt and there was no one else around.

I missed uni, got my decent, be seen out in public, trousers wrecked and got a nasty scare. We have the same landlord and hes furious as well, but I'm not actually sure how this will all play out. I'm the second person its bitten in a few weeks, and it got out today as they left the front door open and didnt notice it was open for about 40mins, so I dont hold out much hope for it not happening again.

Why do people keep these sorts of animals alive? It cant be a happy dog if its biting regularly. Why keep a dog like that? I dont get it. I'd probably forgive a bite if someone did something stupid, but it would be a one chance only thing. A dog that actually attacks would get zero chances and be straight off for behavioural euthanasia. It never gets walked which wont help, but I guess we know why now!

Arrgghhhh!! Stupid, sodding people! My leg hurts 😥

A you have hopefully checked your tetanus date and have arranged a rabies jab….and B yes the stupid careless owners should be the ones put to sleep, but unfortunately that is not going to happen so the dog must be….
This is where the licence to own a dog issue raises its head, majority of people on here, would pass all the paperwork, questions to own dog/s but unfortunately out in the wider world we live in, people who should not own a stuffed toy can get a dog any dog and to my simple mind that is just not right…

I think dogs should be banned from shops.
Absolutely agree. Went to the Range yesterday. They’ve recently allowed dogs in. There was a Frenchie looking utterly bewildered. Just leave the poor bu&&er at home! The amount of stimulation that poor dog must have been getting had to be overwhelming, lights, some, kids running round, people trying to stroke it. Horrendous.

Oh my god, that sounds terrifying! I hope you heal up without issue. As a landlord, I’d be telling her to get rid, harsh but essential. It can’t be allowed to bite, I’m appalled it’s the second incident. What breed is it?

It did break the skin and I've got a big lump thats going to be a huge bruise. It was a definite bite rather than a little nip.

My landlord is dealing with it. I'm in a bit of an awkward position as where I live isnt somewhere you call the police. I'm just waiting to see how it all plays out. He is furious though as it could have gone so wrong if the kids had been out and I hadnt. I dont know how anyone faces off against an XL bully, this was a collie and I was terrified going back out. At least being a collie I could keep the damn thing back with a sweeping brush. Its definitely not right in the head.

I've had so many tetanus shots over the years I apparently wont need another one.

Gosh, I'm Dun. That sounds terrifying.

Dog owners, if you are approaching someone who is visibly nervous about your dog (and they are on a horse!), do you put it on lead? I was riding on one trail, and a couple with a doberman looking thing were on a trail that runs parallel to it. Mine is a grass track through a bog, and the other track goes over a boardwalk that's not safe for horses. There's only about 10-20m of flat grass/bog between them. They made no effort to put it on a lead as we approached, and the dog did that thing where they look straight at you, with ears up, stiff body language. I stopped the horse and growled at it. The couple made no effort to attach it to a lead. It stared intently at me again, like it was contemplating chasing, and I snarled, "Back, don't you dare!" The couple shouted, "He won't bother you!" I shouted back, "Well, I don't know that!" They didn't leash it, and I asked the horse to walk slowly onwards while I looked over my shoulder, ready to go on the offensive at any second. In fairness, it didn't bother us, but who knows if that was down to it not being interested in the horse, or my psychotic two headed monster impression.

Maybe they knew their dog so well that they 100% knew it wasn't going to hassle the horse, but I was clearly unhappy about the situation. Would popping it on a lead for the two seconds it took us to pass one another be so difficult? It would take less than two seconds for things to go wrong if that dog did decide to come at us.

Mugdock itself has signs requesting people to leash their dogs in that section of park, in order to protect birds and other wildlife. Does anyone do that? Do they f*0k.

When I'm riding and meet off lead dogs I always ask the owner 'Is your dog OK?'
They almost always put the dog on the lead, maybe they just need to be made to think about it

Mine go on lead the minute I see anyone: walker, cyclist, jogger, rider, random bird watcher, strange coloured shadow in the distance...

The other day I appologised to a cyclist because Liberty didn't immediately come back when I called and carried on towards him a little. She did return soon after and didn't get close to him, and to be fair to her, I think he was the first cyclist we've come across while she was off lead. I thought it was only polite to check she hadn't scared him. He was very nice and said she was no bother and my dogs were the well behaved type. It made me wonder what other dogs he wad come across...

Of course they should put it on a lead straightaway, and the sheer bl**dy selfish arrogance of someone not leashing it in such a situation is, well, infuriating to say the least. I always put my GSD on his lead in a similar situation. He is good with horses, but it gives the rider peace of mind, and there is always the just in case scenario. As in just this once, possibly, he may not be good, for some reason known to a dog but unknowable to a person.

This is what my leg looked like a couple of days ago! I'm lucky I guess that I've got rock hard calf muscles most of the time and the bloody thing couldnt get a grip with its lower teeth. I've not seen the dog since and am 90% sure shes being evicted, but am just generally keeping a low profile while its all sorted out. I always assumed one day I'd be bitten by a dog through my own stupidity, never occured to me one would go mental and take a chunk out of me!

I always put mine on lead whenever we meet walkers, horses, bikes or whatever.
Last week a friend and I had a lovely holiday with our 2 GSDs in the Elan Valley. Loads of walking and nearly everyone we met with dogs was sensible and had their dogs under control and thanked us for stepping off the past.
Then on the last day we went to a Nature reserve, signs everywhere saying dogs must be on lead. We were having a pleasant walk , saw some people up ahead so as usual stepped off the path. A yellow lab came bowling up towards us, to a background of frantic dog whistle and shouting. I had to block him with my girl as my friends dog who had been good as gold all week was not happy with this invasion. I actually had to get hold of the lab so they could put him on lead, owner asked which way we were going, same way as them unfortunately so she said they would walk fast  . They go ahead round a corner , next minute the whistle starts again and they've let the bloody dog off again. This time it didn't come to us, but I am not kidding the signs to keep dogs on lead were everywhere, just how entitled/stupid can people be.

Last time I went in the feed/ store they were clearing up where a dog had peed on stock. They said it happens far too often but as they sell dog food it's hard to ban them.

Why? No one rides their horse through the feed store. The dog isn't actually the one buying it or reading the ingredients.

Today on leaving my craft meeting in a church, there was an XL type, on lead, sitting at owners side and muzzled, while owner was talking to the volunteer gardeners in the church yard. I overheard the owner telling the gardeners that the dog was reactive after being attacked by a loose dog a few weeks ago. On reaching the church yard gate a man was entering with two smaller dogs, a scottie and a cairn. He had them coupled together with each arm of the coupling being at least a metre in length and he had the same amount again to his hand. There was a bit of confusion as they tried to go both sides of me and his ineffectual directing of them. I carried on to my car and then heard the dogs meet. It seems ineffective man was allowing his dogs to "meet" the XL. I could not see through the hedge but it sounded very much like the gardeners were getting involved.

Pointer owner whose dog had a very aggressive pop-lots of noise-at one of mine today, stupid me thinking it was Luna, who loves mine and they love her (it was dark, kid had a ray gun, looked like the real thing [wasn’t really dark, but in a shady bit and she’s blond and the same height as Luna’s owner])

Mine did an about turn and galloped back to me, horrified. The owner tried to tell me they’d had a ‘standoff’. Don’t tell me what my dog would do, he’s extremely submissive and would never have a ‘standoff’. She then tried to approach me to tell me it’s because mine are entire, like hers. I asked her to keep walking and to not keep approaching as I was obviously trying to get away from her, leads on, limping away as fast as I can.

Was your dog running into the other dog's space and it told him to clear off?

You could not make this up. I got bitten again, by a different collie. Nearly took the end of my finger off and I'm going to have to go for stitches, but first I have to wait for a car to be dropped off. Probably my fault this time, as I was delivering a neighbour's post and put my hand over the top of the gate not knowing it was there and it jumped up and bit me. All these years and all the stupid stuff I have done and I get bitten twice in a few weeks! After I finished crying I did laugh becuase COME ON! this is ridiculous!
