Irresponsible Owners

I've been feeling crap with a cold so have opted for flat walks on muddy tracks near hills which I have to drive to Not seen anyone.

Today popped out round the block as feeling a lot better and almost immediately a complete pair of twits wanted their 2 JRs to say hello to mine. So mine is pressed into a wall even though we are in a huge retail park with loads of room, the other 2 dogs straining on their leads trying to approach mine and the bloke saying, "Is your's OK"? "No he's not" I snapped whilst retreating at speed and yanking dog out of the way. Apparently this is not allowed judging by their loud disgruntled comments and looks.

I dare not go in the nearby park. Too scared 😁

Feeling sorry for my friend Françoise, she took a 3 months old Portuguese Water dog puppie from the Rspca
and now at the age of 8 months, she is having big troubles...

She has been really careful with not over exercising and followed the vet instruction to the letter but the poor Moon is having
dysplesia on both hip..

Her insurance won't pay anything, as she has not taken to premium option covering génétique disease....

The vet recommend hydrothérapy twice a week at the cost of CHF 100.- a session and having both hips operated on,
he is talking about rasping the head of the femoral bone ?

Françoise just doesn't have that sort of money and asked the rspca but they won't help her financially...

The young bitch is full of life, playing with the cat in the house and when i saw them tonight, the poor Moon was very lame...

Françoise is trying to keep her quiet but it's hard and heart breaking for such a young dog..

The cost of the operations and follow up with go up to CHF 10'000 or more and there will be no guarantee of being a succes...

I don't know what i would do in her shoes tbh, but what sort of life would that be for a young dog ?

That is very unfortunate, for such a young dog. I know it’s easier from an outsider’s perspective, but if the money can’t be found for the surgery, then I’d say PTS would be the only option. I don’t think hip dysplasia can be alternatively managed, and you can’t have an 8 month old puppy lame and in pain for the rest of it’s life.

This could be a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) which is usually considered a last resort/salvage type surgery, with varying outcomes, but is a relatively cheap option compared to total hip replacement.

Thank you for your replies.

Yes, Françoise is a horse woman and i think pts, would be ok for her once she tried a conservative treatment
but i don't know if the vet would be ok to pts such a young dog ?

Moon technically belongs to the rspca so if Françoise doesn't want her anymore, the rspca will take her back and try to rehome her....

Don't think, Françoise can decide to pts, it would be a breach of contract !

It's a no win situation but surely and hopefully, the rspca will either pay for the treatment or agree to pts.

I don't know much about French insurance (or UK insurance probably 😅) but I would push this.

Surely there is no definitive way to guarantee that the dysplasia is a hereditary condition? I do not see how they can exclude on this basis, when it isn't a gene for instance. There are other reasons that hip dysplasia happens.

Is there an ombudsman in France?

I’ve long thought I wish insurance companies would take into account health tests and results when calculating the premium. But I suppose without DNA testing we only hope our animal’s listed breeding is accurate.

Edited because it was deeply random!

I keep forgetting this is national 'Let's all walk our dogs, who have clearly never been outdoors before, at the same time' week

I suspect my poor dog spent more time in a down than upright or walking today. She did a great job and people were very cheerful and respectful but my god where are all these springer spaniels the rest of the year.

It was Viszlas and labs for us , on a walk round Beeston castle where we rarely see anyone !

Today is the closest I've come to actually thumping someone (I didn't!) This was due to their loose atrocious orange a-poo roaring over, on and through my D dog!
I got VERY CROSS and I think the owner got the message when I kicked the dog for a 2nd time, I was beyond angry!

I am opting out of people and their eleventy million springers today, we're going to the paddock to play football.

Saying that, the last time we went on Christmas day a big group of people walked through the field next door, which is private land with no right of way, and let their dogs run up and down the fence line trying to find a way in.

I have said for years do these dogs just never get walked the other 51 weeks of the year as I never see them then suddenly they’re everywhere?!

My springer spent yesterday chasing the quad around the yard for 3 hours getting jobs done, did a 40 minute schooling session with me studiously trotting alongside with his ball in his mouth, then the very serious job of trying to micro manage every blade of straw while I was sweeping the yard and collapsed in his bed. We will not be surfacing back into public until the Christmas dog walkers have retreated again, he’s very good with dogs but I’m very bad with stupid people 😁

I will advice Françoise to get help from the vet, writing the diagonise down and try again with the insurance.
We are in Switzerland, we have Ombudsman, I will look into it.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Not so much irresponsible as completely clueless. Walking my two, had just let them off and was about to turn onto a very narrow path through the woody section. Both of mine decided to have a poo about 20 feet apart so I was picking up one lot. Young lad with very growly terrier is stood looking at me. I asked if he was walking on or coming back my way, having seen him walk onto the path and waited for him to be out of reach. No idea why he stopped. He told me he didn’t know what was wrong with his dog, growling and straining on its flexilead. Recalled mine while telling him I needed to pick up and I’d go the other way. He walked at me 😱 despite having just walked in the opposite direction. 🤷‍♀️

Having one dog that doesn’t like people, and one that dislikes other dogs, I walk them when it suits me to avoid all the crap. I’m not sure why you all seem to walk places where over and over you get grief!

Why should I spend money on fuel when there are walks over fields from my house , just because idiots can’t control their dogs .
Interestingly , after seeing random people everywhere between Christmas and New Year, it’s a beautiful sunny but cold day today and I’ve just done my second walk and the only footprints in the snow are mine from this morning .

I’m not being smug at all. I live in the middle of a busy town.

Street walks are an absolute no no, no matter what time of day or night.

I have walks in woodland and parks 10 minute walks from home. It’s just too hard to walk there, so we get in the car and go elsewhere. I begrudge the fuel used, but so much less stressful walking.

Odin is always on a lead. If any off lead small dog came up to him in his face, I have no doubt he would seriously hurt it. He is muzzled when we walk at busy times.

I'd like to do that, but sadly around here unless I'm up and out v late at night or before dawn, then I'm scuppered.
I cannot account for stupid, but I'm v proactive when out.
