irritable mares.is it the time of year ????

daughters mare has become particularly grumpy in the field and is throwing her weight about and generally being grumpy.thinking it may be due to lack of grass,weather although not cold.she was like this when we first got her in april especially in early evening wanting to come in for a feed and has been chilled all summer.its almost like she knows the clocks are changing.any ideas as dont want a stroppy mare all winter

Ooooh - mine's being a stroppy cow. Went to catch her and she disappeared across 20 acres...............I was knackered by the time I caught her and then had to go for a ride LOL. I think she's in season though...say no more!

mrs m.same routine as mine all come in at night are fed and have plenty of hay.when do they tend to have a last season as she had her first of the year when we got her and was awful.having 3 mares and all their hormones is not much fun.plan to changefencing for a bit more grass but am thinking she may be a mardy high maintenance mare.shes also been clipped and hasnt had any decent work this week yet with the nights drawing in.

it must be that time of year. My dressage mare has been pretty much unrideable for nearly 3 weeks, showing season - like behaviour and major grumpiness. She is a very high maintenance marish mare but is particularly difficult at the moment. Our usually balanced rhythmical canter is just a bucking fit at the moment but i think she has some discomfort, like period pain. I have abandoned the competition diary for this month and am just giving her loads of TLC.

my girl is going through a stroppy phase. as a youngster she was an absolute B*** when in season but has improved greatly with age (thank goodness!). She is now 9.
BUT have noticed last couple of seasons she has been very grumpy and for the first time in over a year threatened to buck me off. I've got a feeling it's that time of year as they go from regular summer seasons into winter - the transitional phase. we tend to have tricky ones in spring too then settle for the summer.
Hopefully she will settle in a while.
The slightly more limited food supply probably just gives her an excuse for her grumpiness! Ellie is disgusted when anyone gets food that she does not at the mo!

Yes, with the cooler temperatures and lessening grass my mare is getting grumpier for sure, her attitude does tend to change a bit come winter.
I am bracing myself for stroppy time, as soon as I put hay out she is pacified! Ofcourse!
