Is 14.1 too small?

I have a 13.3 fine new forest, I'm 5ft 4 and I look a bit big, but not to heavy. I think you will look fine. Good luck. You also can't beat a connie even if it is part connie

Just another point of view (feel free to ignore). I bought a 14.2 and have owned him for about 16 years but I do wish he was a couple of inches bigger. I’m 5’2” and do struggle a bit with my weight so sometimes feel I’m a bit too heavy for him. He’s been brilliant though.

Absolutely. I'm just shy of 5ft2 :)confused:) and my gelding is 14.1hh. I honestly wouldn't have anything any bigger. Easier to put rugs on!

This is me on my friend's 14.1hh and 14.3hh connies, I'm 5'2". I feel too big as I'm used to bigger horses but I probably look fine. Get a photo and see for your self? View attachment 101624View attachment 101625
For what it's worth, I think you look fine! I had an 13hh Exmoor pony when I was in my early teens. I was 5'8" and weighed about 7-8stone. His barrel took up my long leg length and he had stamina to burn. We hunted, did gymkhana games, long country rides staying away overnight with friends.
Nobody commented adversely about me or my pony. We had a ball. He stayed sound as a pound until his death from old age at 34.

I'm sure you won't be but do judge it on the day and don't be afraid to keep looking if you don't feel 100% comfy with his size or how you look on him (get pictures).

My avatar is me (5'7) on my 13.3hh connie. I now just hack her (similar to you) and she's absolutely fine as am I - just took some getting used to balance wise.
You both look lovely!

I'm 5'4'' riding a 14.1 Cobx - he is short backed so can only take a 16 inch saddle, but I have shortish legs/thighs so I just about fit! If you feel the spark then go for it!

I’ve only ridden 2 ponies as a fully formed adult that I didn’t feel under horsed on.

(for context I’m 5’7 and a bit and I ride in a 17.5 saddle and feel much happier in a v forward cut jump saddle than a GP if not using dressage saddle)

one was a turbo cob about 14.2 that could jump round novice (not with me!) and one was a new forest pony that was like a mini horse, he was wonderful. I didn’t look great but it didn’t feel how it looked! I’ve ridden other ponies and I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing what I do on anything smaller than 15.2. I feel safer on something bigger, when I’ve got a bit in front and my knee isn’t over the knee roll on a saddle that fits said pony.

All of that being said, it’s not what anyone else thinks, as long as you aren’t too heavy and it sounds like you like the pony!!

I haven’t read all the replies so apologies if this has already been mentioned. 5’2” is fine on a 14.1/2 hi pony but what do you weigh? It’s the weight (including tack) that is important. I’m 5’ & ride a 14hh pony but I only weigh 81/2 stone. (Add tack on to that)

I’m only 5”1 and ride a 13.3hh and a 12.1hh. I do feel big on the 12.1hh but I no I’m not to heavy for him. I think if this pony ticks all the boxes for you don’t worry about how You might look on her, try her and see how you feel. Good luck

And the workload. Hunting v medium hacking is very different. Its not clear what the OP plans, but hopefully we will get a full report with pics tomorrow!

One of my sharers is 5'9". She took a14hh NFs to the New Forest Boxing Day point to point last year and came in5th. He came back bouncing (wasn't even fully fit!) and they looked great together.

Ponies do the job of a horse. They are better value, healthier, easier to keep, transport, mount... In short. Get him.

I'm planning for light hacking. I have no sense of direction so I'd get lost if I did anything more.

I am in love with ponies. When I started looking I was focused on horses but I've been turned around to all things native/cob.

Depends on how pony ‘rides’. I have three horses. Smallest is 15.1 but she’s very short coupled. Short neck. Pony strides. I’m 5.8. 8 stone. I’m long in the back so do feel like I’m sitting on her shoulders and my back aches after a long ride.

I am 5'3 and ride a chunky 13.2 (profile pic).

If you like this 14.1 and he suits you and you seem to both get alone fine, then frankly what are you waiting for!! Snap him up!!

There is an "Adults Riding Ponies" group on FB which you may find useful too. A lot of us have re-discovered our miss-spent youth and "gone back onto ponies". It's great!

Go for it I'd say.

When I started to look it was all horses but now I'm favouring natives/cobs. To be honest, I wouldn't feel safe on anything taller than 14.3 but that's just me being short and not bouncy.
