Hi all thought I’d come on here to ask as I want unbiased opinions . So I have been offered to share a lovely new forest pony who is 13.2hh and when I look back on the videos I’m worried I might be to big for him for context I am 5’6 or 167.7cm in more exact measurement. My legs don’t hang super low below his stomach there still on his stomach just when I put my heels down it goes under his stomach a little bit I’m not sure if that makes sense lol. Everybody I’ve asked and sent videos to have told me I look fine including the owners who said ‘you acctually seem like quite a nice size for him’ I think I might be a bit worried as the horses I would ride previously where about 15.3 and I’m use to them and it’s quite a big downsize I think I look playing the only thing I’m worried about that much is quite embarrassing but honestly is if we ever went on outings and if people would comment or whisper on how I’m to tall as I remember from London horse show during the ponies round people chatting about things like that the rider looks tall and other stuff like that it’s a silly thing to worry about I know but I need an unbiased opinion!!

As long as you are not more than 15-20% of his ideal weight including saddle, your riding boots, hat etc you should be fine.

I'm 5-6/5'7 and have a 13.3hh New Forest. I've had him well over a decade (closer to 15 years) and have done and still do all sorts with him - dressage, jumping, XC, Trec but our true love is long hacks. He's never once struggled over 5-6 hour rides over hilly, rough terrain

We're only not competing in lower level endurance because of transport issues not because I've once felt under horsed or too big on him.

He's a power house and the breed are built to A. Eat gorse and B.Carry men on the forest. Enjoy! You can't beat a New Forest pony in my mind.

If you are worried about 'looking' too big, a saddle that fits you as well as the pony is just as important as the height and will help enormously.

But 5'6" on a 13.2, especially as NFs tend to be chunks, ought to be fine - the main issue for welfare is making sure rider + tack comes in at a maximum of 15% of the pony's ideal healthy weight.

New forests are the best natives so enjoy!! :)

Thank you I am within the 20% rule so that should be fine and I think I’m just a bit worried as in my opinion his legs look quite little lol or it could potentially be due to the owners saying he needs to rebuild muscle from time off

Thankyou!! I was just getting a little paranoid as I haven’t ridden ponies in a while and his legs seem little 😅
