As title really. Have seen an absolutely stunning 2 1/2 - 3yo colt for sale. He's a very cheeky chap and can be full of himself. The only way I could consider having him would be to get him cut.
Will his stallion tendencies mellow at all or is it too late now?
He's never covered anything to my knowledge although I'm pretty sure he knows exactly what his goolies are for !

Not to old, get him done and hope he retains the sparkle, although it will probably fade as he loses the hormones especially as he has not actually done the deed. He'll have a much happier life as a loved gelding than a potentially troublesome colt/stallion.

I wouldn't say so, my two year old is getting done next week as they weren't dropped beforehand. I also had a rising 3 year old who I got cut he calmed down just the same as my yearling did. I wouldn't say its too late at all but see what other people suggest

I took on a livery a few years ago, he was rising 3 and uncut, he lived out for a while with my pony geldings, one of whom put the youngster firmly in his place, he was cut and within no time was fine, being out with older wiser friends soon stopped any messing. Once cut he was also much better for his owner and gradually became like any other 3 year old.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Your making this decision much easier :D how long will it take for the testosterone to get out of his system and be able to turn out with my mare and gelding ?

In theory 6weeks. He'll be completely infertile by then. But in practise it can sometimes be the whole year or never until his behaviour improves. However if he's never covered, and more importantly, has lived with other horses so knows how to socialise he may well no problem at all.

Maybe look at a hormonal supplement for the mare so she's not too marish and flirty, and Rigcalm can be
extremely effective for over amorous geldings. Id have him on it for a while before you put him out with a mare.

I had mine done when he was rising three. Has a massive neck and can be mouthy but other than that it was fine.... Although there was a lot to chop!!!

This is really tricky. When I first started horsey shopping I wrote myself a brief, he completely does not fill the brief ! But if you all saw him I'm sure you would all agree he was something special. Weighing up pros and cons when your completely head over heels is really difficult!

I had one who hadn't been cut til he was 7. He had a hell of a neck on him, and could only be turned out with mares. He would batter other geldings, even busting through post and rail to get to them. He was a complete pain in the arse sometimes on the ground too but I think this was due to having been allowed to get away with murder as a couple of months consistent handling he did improve no end.

Horses can be gelded at any age providing they are healthy. I know of one that was gelded at 19, so he could be retired with other horses. A couple of months later he had completely forgotten he had ever been a stallion.

Mine was gelded at 5. He'd been used for breeding. Apart from him giving me some really intimidating stares, he's an absolute sweeties, though the mares find him extremely attractive when in season.

With my little one it was pretty instant and then improved over a 3-6month period. But the vet says usually 6-8weeks you may see a difference each horse is different. My next geld I would expect him to take up to 6months to completely change his behavior because he is so coltish but this is only what I have experienced

Have to add, though mine gelded at 5 and used for breeding - gelded a year before I got him, when he first sniffed a mare in season, he went crazy and got an instant massive erection (I was with him in the stable at the time) and was kicking the walls and making weird noises (I'd only just got him at this point and thought "Christ almighty! What Have I bought!!???). I think it was just the memories of being at stud. :D

Mine was done at 2 1/2,never had any issues. Very fine TB so wasn't cresty anyway, wasn't interested in the girls at all for years but now does have 2 mares that he dotes on. He did chew anything in sight until he was 7 or 8 but I know a lot of horses that do that anyway.

My last horse was cut at 4 (I bought him at 3 1/2). He HAD covered mares though... (and i'm lead to believe it was several mares!!)

I did notice a difference in his manners with me after he had been cut, however he still had a lot of 'Stallion tendancies' when turned out with others - he was top dog, would herd away new horses, could be quite rough when playing ...and even tried to mount a few geldings along the way

However, he was a good boy really!! :p

I had my Arab cut at 4, the vet came to me and he did it standing in the stable no problems, he can still be a bit stallion like with strange horses but he is turned out with my mare and get on fine, his still kept his lovely big neck though:)

I bought my tb as an untouched 3 year old stallion!

he was gelded straight away.
He is playful but shows no other stalion tendoncies.

he is a lovely boy and so different from the scared boy i had at the begining!
