Ditto Kenzo - if it's a bit dumpy/stocky/hairy it's a cob. My horse is both a Welsh Cob, a Welsh Section D and a plain old cob.

If I saw a Highland out in the field I'd probably refer to it as a cob, unless I'd already been told it was specifically a Highland. People could look at my horse and not know she was a Section D, but they'd know she was a cob of some variety!

There are show cobs, M&Ms that look like cobs and can be referred to as cobs, and hairy gypsy type cobs. All with the head of a maid and the bottom of a cook.

Oooh gratuitous picture time. Our first pony - Ebony - is a Welsh Section D and I have always understood she is a cob (and I know nothing about horses as a non horsey mum). However, she is - to me - the most beautiful pony in the world.

A Welsh D is a Welsh Cob..A Welsh C is a Welsh pony of Cob Type but they are specific breeds.
A cob as most people know them are a type rather than a breed.
M&M is a term to describe NATIVE horses and ponies so a Welsh D and a Highland would come under that.

Spot on. Read and learn everyone

Another gratuitous pic to annoy Shils.

My Ebony has the registered name Trefleath Calon Lan - and she has a pure white heart on her head!

I know a dealer who would buy young horses, jump them up through the grades, til they'd reached the end of their ability/talent level. He would then re-register them at the bottom of the grades, as a new horse, where they would appear very talented (of course).
He would sell them on their 'potential' to fools who paid way over the odds.
But the point of my rambling story is, Nuala, that he burned new white markings on the horses by using a potato, heated to burning temp in the microwave.
Nice heart markng, incidentally.

q/r No, a Highland is not a cob.

I own a welsh cob, who is exactly that or a Welsh Section D but definitely not a 'cob' (without the 'Welsh' prefix).

A cob, to me, is either a show cob (hogged, lots of muscle bulk, stocky in size) or it's of a traditional sort, big bone, big feathers, lots of muscle, leg on each corner sort.

(or a Welsh cob)

This is my Welsh Cob. (sorry for gratuitous pics!)

And this is one that I would say is an example of a more traditional cob- (please no critique or comments about lack of hat- rider now wears hat)

This is my friends 2 year old highland colt big boned, feathers leg at each corner sort, a pony of cob type. The only cob breed is welsh D but there are plenty of purebred cob types around!
