I currently have my lad on this, he's not overly silly and looks great. A livery came to me yesterday and tutted at me because it should only be fed to "race horses" and it is firing up my horse.

What do you think?

I do wish people would keep their opinions to themselves sometimes. He is your horse so tell her to keep her beak out unless you ask for help.

It can be the wrong food for some horses. I cant feed it to mine but then there is quite a lot I cant feed my horse.lol.
It can affect horses in different ways and some are fine and some are not but personally if you are happy with how your horse is going I dont think it should even cross your mind any more. x

I dont know about other types but when I gave it to my lad TB x ID it was like rocket fuel he went ballistic. Gave the bag away to HHO member who has my retired horse. Gulliver is CB x TB and he is fine on it as is her own boy.

I think that there is not a definite yes or no!

I used to feed it to my old TB and she was fine on it but my friend fed it to her TB last year and he turned him nuts!!!

Sorry not to be more helpful

I can feed the alfalfa (lucerne) to my boy but not the mollasses they coat it with. Definitely not a yes or no answer!!

Thanks for the replies, I normally would ignore comments like this, but I have just moved on a new yard and I suppose it got me thinking.
He is a TB and is rising 6 and being schooled and hacked quite hard, I have tried many other chaffs and he simply will not eat them, it was suggested to me that I try ready grass.

If he's happy then don't worry. Every horse is different. My friend used to feed her mare it, she was fine. I fed my mare it and whoop whoop off it went

Sent her hyper. But then i can feed my mare oats and barley and she's no different. Feed my new one this and he's hyper.
They're only the same as us. My friend has red bull, she's fine. I have red bull sends me whappy

As with anything, just monitor him and watch him. If there's no problems then stuff the nosy parker and carry on

I think its like most things, it may suit one horse but not suit another.

FWIW I feed my TB mare alfa a as did the person I bought her from. In fact, I've always fed it and never had a bad reaction to it. If your happy with your boy, I'd ignore this person and carry on as you are

Tell her to feck off.

it really isn't like rocket fuel! i'd be tempted to tell her to **** off too...! wtf is it with all these "experts" who think it's fine to give unsolicited rude and erroneous advice!
it has high protein levels so i tend to feed it instead of cereals (esp if i think a horse might be prone to ulcers, e.g. my ex-racer), or for growth (to youngsters.) some horses go a bit whizzy on it, some don't. if your horse likes it and is not going whizzy, i'd carry on. Readigrass is good too, most like it, and it has lower protein levels fwiw.

I feed it to my TB mare and I have never had problems with it.

I would tell her to bugger off and keep her opinions to herself its up to you what you feed your horse.

Ask the lady on the yard how long she has been working for Dengie and how many racehorses she has trained, then ask her for a copy of the vetting and survey she has done on YOUR horse to come to such a conclusion as to what is suitable or not for him......

Then when she can't produce...tell her to feck off.

My horse thinks Alfa a only gets better when you add the oil!!! He loves it and looks fab and is always a little crazy but never dangerous (17hh 6yo warmblood).

Sorry if I sound a bit strong but it amazes me how much front these busy bodies have, and the owners that care (you and I...) really do take it to heart.x

its not like rockert fuel as far as i'm concerned its high protein, both my tb are on it no probs. tell them to but out unless you ask for the opinion, your horse your choice simple.

Thanks again, apparently this livery has a thing for other people feeding regimes and likes to offer "advice".

Yes he has silly moments but nothing I can't handle and I think we would have these regardless of feed, we are picking up the pace with him and he doesn't always like it and throws in the odd spat. He doesn't have any other cereal . Think I will ignore her on this one.

I have my ex-racer on it and he is as laid back when he is fed this as when he isn't.
If your horse eats it, and looks well on it without blowing his mind keep feeding it.

I've fed it to loads of TB's with zero problems.............. redi grass is just dried spring grass in a bag remember, so may potentially be more heating if your horse is sensitive to sugars.

Oh I wish it was, but no! Both the Cob and Fjord are on Alfa-a oil and I’ve seen more energy in a rock, he, he. Once again all seems to depend on the horse.

I asked exactly the same question back in Autumn, when Star was being very silly. It turned out it wasn't the alfa - it was the fact that we had just moved yards Now she's a total saint (touch wood).
Still got plenty of 'go' and sometimes not a lot of 'whoa', but much more settled.

If you are happy with your horse's attitude to life, then ignore her.

It did send my lad a bit loony for a while, but it was winter when i put him on it. I just held on - quite enjoyed the ride, then he got over it and he is fine now. I only have him on Alfa A and fibre nuts though. 16h IDx loony thingy.

It amazes me how people know more about your horse than you do.. The 'F' Word sounds like a good option.x

I feed green gold which is alfa from Simple System to my two. No problem at all. However, Farra (clydesdale) did for her get fired up on the Dengi version which does have some molasses in it.

Mine get a mixture of this and Just Grass - gives them good protein - they are 5 and still growing, slow release energy and nothing else as no molasses or cereals are in the products.
