Is an indoor floodlit sand school a luxury or the norm?

I am thinking of moving to a real nice yard that has one for this reason as well as others and think it would be a great benefit to keep horses ticking over in the winter. If you have one . does it get used, just worried I might get lazy and decide to curl up on the sofa instead, being realistic, but I am also a fantic so maybe not.

It is great to have a good indoor. THe one at the yard Im on now gets used all the time during the winter or the rainy summer ( this is Lancashire after all). Sadly Im having to move and the new yard dosnt have an indoor I just know i will miss it loads and im not sure if i will ride as much this winter.

Yes it definatley gets used and if im honest it is a god send for us :) Especially if the stables are in the same barn, once the horses are in you dont have to venture outside at all so no problems with the weather :)

Ours gets used a fair bit too. In fact sometimes I end up not riding, even though its there, cos there are too many in it and I can't be bothered waiting :(

That would definately be a luxury.

Although we are lucky on the yard I am on - we have an outdoor floodlit arena and my daughter will use it probably 3 nights in the week through the winter.

Luxury, ours only opened a couple of years ago but it was a lifesaver last winter when our yard was like a frozen wasteland for a month, as it was the only place you could ride!

That would definitely be a luxury - mind you so would water at our place!

Would love it though & definitely make good use of it!

Luxury but something you have to pay for I suppose.

*goes back to her muddy field and no school*

I know how you feel, I am on grass livery have been for 5 years, stream for water. I have just had enough of roughing it and waking up at ungodly hours to ride etc, plus I have to trudge through someone elses field of unloved horses to get to mine, almost impossible if I am armed with buckets of food

The yard I am currently at has a large floodlit Indoor school. I must say I definitely use it more throughout the winter when the days are shorter and I can't hack after work because it's too dark. However, during the summer I rarely use it as I tend to spend most of my time hacking. The school does get used all year round by other liveries though as there are quite a few people at my yard who never hack and only school. I personally couldn't imagine ever doing that but each to their own...

we have an indoor (with lights) and an outdoor. Use the outdoor all summer but this time of year outdoor is only used at the weekends and spend the rest of my time in the indoor. Was amazing in the snow for the past 2 years as baby horse could carry on working!! Def worth having!!

i have just moved to a yard with a smallish but perfectly serviceable indoor school - having spent the last couple of yrs in farm liveries - its feels like such a luxury - i have been able to sign up for the winter dressage programme & really enjoy the fact that i can nip into the school for 15 mins - play with something & stop - when i hired a menage by the hr - there was such pressure to make the time useful
normally at this time of yr [ clocks going back ] i would pretty much give up on any idea of riding til march [ odd bit of week end hacking excepted] - but this year i can ride my horse all year - can you tell i'm excited:D

When you own your own facilities at home a luxury! I have always had floodlit outdoors but an indoor just for me seems very expensive (In Norway between 60k-100k).

A luxury. We have a very small one, more of a large lunge pen really, but it was an absolute GODSEND last winter. It meant I could exercise Genie as normal when we had all that snow.

Havong an indoor would be brilliant. Mustnt complain though cos our YO has just put lights up around our outdoor after waiting years for him to do so
Being able to ride in the evening this winter will be brilliant.

Theres one at our yard but we never get to use it during winter because theres always lessons in (its a RS), so were stuck with the flooded outdoor :( ... Id much prefer a yard with a proper outdoor surface and no indoor :p

A school of any sort within a reasonable distance would be a luxury!

I've been hiring an indoor 3/4 hr drive away to maximise my winter riding but now by regular booking has been guzzumpted by a canine club :(

Used to be able to use an indoor school when Charlie was kept at a riding school. No charge for using it, but a nightmare to be able to use, as you had to try and fit in around the lessons. I was lucky as I worked shifts so I could use it at different times. Now an indoor school would be a luxury. We use a sand school at different yard about 1/4 mile away. I cant access this in bad or icy weather as the road is steep up hill and becomes treachous to use.

It is a luxury, and a fab one!

We now have an indoor & an outdoor, after years of DIY livery with no school at all.

You do have to motivate yourself to ride when it is cold and dark, but it really is brilliant to be able to ride in even the worst of winter. Very glad I moved to have access to an indoor, wouldn't want to go back now :)

A luxury. And one that I don't particularly want either. But I'm fortunate in that my gang all live out 24/7/365 so if the weather's bad, or in the dark evenings, there is no need for me to make sure they've had sufficient exercise. I quite like to ease my boys off a bit at this time of year, after a busy summer season, and it's nice for me too - I don't feel obliged to ride if I don't fancy it. (Yes, I'm more than happy with my very simple, very basic, horsey "lifestyle", which suits me and the gang down to the ground!)
