Is anybody else's horse a little bit loopy at the moment?

Just wondered if anyone else was experiencing anything similar to us. Both my and my OH's horses have been a bit more spooky than usual over the past few weeks. In the case of my horse, I would assume it could be the spring grass, (although he's never reacted like this before) but my OH's horse is turned out with no / very little grass and ad-lib hay. Both are Welsh Sec Ds, usually very steady. Fed hay, chaff and lo-cal balancer (which hasn't been changed). They've both seemed 'on high alert', spooking at things they would never usually give a second glance and generally just being a bit silly.

Could it be something to do with the weather? My little Sec A seems his usual self.

The section D in our field is completely mental today. Would not touch him with a barge pole!
No idea why. Mines has been stuck in a week- as my sig states- spring has sprung :p
Think most peoples are feeling a bit *fresh* ;)

Yep mine has for the past few weeks for no apparent reason, he has been extra fidgety on the ground and constantly on the look out for something, I had considered that some of the local kids may have wound him up at first as there is a field that has public access on one side of him but I cant see it having lasted for that long so not sure whats up with him. The grass normally gives him a spring in his step but doesnt leave him freaked out by nothing.

My 21yo bombproof plod of a pony was meant to nanny my youngster on a hack this week. On the main road youngster was sound as a pound plodding along just giving the odd look to the drains, pony was full on spooking took me right out into the road and just being a general d**k. I think it's the weather?:rolleyes:

Really interesting to hear other people's experiences of this. Am starting to think it is the weather. We have had a very strange start to spring this year!

I was going to ridge today but they are both being total plonkers so ill just watch them tearing up an already horrid muddy churned up field. Ill just play with the yearling today who seems to be being the most sensible of the lot

My lovely placid boy spooked so badly he put his sharer on the floor last week and then yesterday broke through all his elastic tie-things when tied on the yard!

He has never been loopy (well, not since he was young and quite babyish - well over ten years ago) so not sure what's gotten into him; he isn't normally affected by grass or weather. Have to admit I quite like him having more 'fizz' when I'm riding though - he's normally a real kickalong.

I'm the complete opposite! Wish my boy would turn back to the kickalong plod he used to be! Just wondering when that will be. Any ideas?

mine was a complete psycho this morning - tried to leap into a ditch because there was a scary bird  But then they're in a lot because of the weather so I can't really blame him

Mine are both vile atm.

BH is out of work which always makes him disgusting. Nitty is cross because she has to stay in a lot at the moment. That coupled with the wind and rain up their arses is making them practically impossible to get any sense from!

Horrible animals!

See my post about looking for someone to school my youngster!!

He is a bucking machine at the moment - he used to buck a bit but now is being a right prat when lungeing and jumping. He is even being strong and silly out hacking - that has never happened before - he can't always keep up with big striding warmbloods and now is getting angry about it and then bucking and cantering on the spot and being very silly!

Was going to reply this morning saying that mine had been a star, but after seeing her this afternoon, I take it back! Little so and so was in "if I can't gallop round like a loon I'll buck" mode for most of the ride. I'm putting it down to a combination of the weather and her having too much energy at the moment.

On the plus side, I got a lovely flying change out her!

Yep, just left them all galloping round the field, bucking and bronking like idiots! They are usually a pretty quiet herd too. Must be the weather!

Mine is also being an idiot. Took her in this morning to get ready for our first show and she managed to work herself into a complete tizz and pranced around for about an hour with a half plaited mane. Eventually managed to get her tack on (total mission) and had a 2 minute warm up while trying to pull the half done plaits out before going in for our test. Total disaster. :o

I've just been having this conversation on the yard. Mine is definately more forward-going (in his case that's not a bad thing), and our hacking companion this morning was really on one! Milly's usually quite a steady hack but she stomped around like she'd been fed a bucket of oats, we could barely keep up and requests from her rider to slow down did not go down well. The aged TB mare on the yard was apparently spinning around and generally totally crazy yesterday.

Hoh yeah! The orange mare, who is normally keen and eager but pretty laid back, is a total ditz right now! My three year old is saner, but I think that's only because everything is new and exciting, so she's not trying to make her own fun every other second!

Mine's never been as "strange" as he's being at the moment after 2 weeks on new grass....or it might be the weather we've been having. Normally he goes out on the summer grass and becomes very relaxed (partly due to bloatedness and feeling all is SO well with his world now it contains grass again), and he's even fine about being brought in at night happily away from it. At the moment some days he's vaguely hysterical about getting to it - grass lust I'm guessing. Quite stressy, chewing wood, door kicking which is not like him. I think it's also something to do with the weather and work I've been doing meaning since the clocks changed I've not ridden him in the longer days as much as I normally would at this time of year - usually by now in nice weather I'd be riding 4-5 times a week and barely managing 1-2. He definitely then is more pushing of the boundaries. I rode him briefly tonight and could see a difference in how he was with me when I got off. I think with turnout on good grass, windy rain when they like to be a big herd all together and lack of riding can make him think he's gone partially feral or back to the wild :D

Yup, had my first fall of him today and spent five hours in casualty. Fortunately nothing broken but very sore so won't be riding for a while, which won't help him. I blame it on the low pressure sending them loopy.

My god...my very normal laid back full ID is a complete pratt at the moment. He was like this, though last year, so again put it down to the spring grass and the cold cold wet weather.
Normally he is ACE out hacking even though he is only 5, but this last week he came out of his field snorting at everything and tacked him, as soon as I got into middle of village he was on his toes and knew he wasnt his normal plodding self! Got up into the country and there was a cat jumping up onto a field wall and he stopped in his tracks, our hacking companion decided to join in the fun and before we know it we had got off and walked them up the road - it was so much safer since the companion horse spins and bolts. Walked them in hand up the country road until his adrenalin had come back down and then climbed back on a gate to get back on and carried on our ride - made them trot for ages though to knacker them out for their naughty behaviour.
Had to laugh though cos I was like, its a bloody cat!!! tee hee cheeky little monkey (albeit 17.1hh and not very little!)

Yep.

My usual kick along plod had a massive stress at a wind chime this morning which lead to a huge spin, followed by a slip as he tried to leg it in the opposite direction down the lane - so so so out of character (the windy conditions didn't help much).

Roll on summer turnout!

Yes! My one and the other 2 have been hooning around the field and being very spooky. Leading them to and from the field was mission in itself with all the spinning, prancing, snorting! I'm blaming weather and grass.

Yes,knobberpony has been on her toes for at least a week now, snorting and bouncing about at nothing.Today she spotted 4 ramblers a field away and nearly turned herself inside out,the silly old thing. We have a new pony on loan, less than half her age and he is being far more sensible than the silly old girl is.

Glad it's not just mine then...new grass, crappy weather and being in heat have left me with a nutter. The whole herd was loopy yesterday and I decided to leave my girl to it for the weekend. I have already lost my wellies twice in the mud this week and really did'nt fancy a hat trick so I have spent the day putting the final touches to the nursery (due in 2 weeks - eek!) and hoping she will have got it all out of her system by tomorrow.
