Is anyone awake? I need some help with barking.

We struggle, I’m not sure what Fizz will be like now with Dobby next to her but even in her crate with normal bed etc Fizz panics if she’s in a strange place and can’t see us so she ends up crated in the same room as us over night. I’d have ended up on the sofa too in the same situation as you.

Next time, bring a thick memory foam camping mat and a sleeping bag so you can sleep with your dog in comfort. It's lovely that you reassured him. Unless these trips are a regular occurrence there's little point in trying to train him to sleep far from you in a strange place.

I am too neurotic about theft to leave mine in the car. Not worried about the car, you understand!

I would never leave a dog in the car overnight ,I am even very careful about where I leave the car when I am shopping .
A dog was stolen from a car in the car park of one of our local pubs they don’t allow dogs in bed rooms so it was there overnight it was an eldery spaniel .
It was ransomed .
It makes me upset to think about it at least they got it back .

I'm not quite sure why anyone would take a dog to stay with folk who don't like dogs? It's not fair on any of the parties involved, and certainly not on the dog.

its not an easy time of year to book house/pet sitters or kennels. my in laws were fairly terrified of dogs but understood that they are part of our lives now-so if the dog/s were with us then they were accommodated with compromises on both sides. saying that, animals are the perfect excuse to not go visit people you don't want to visit :D

I would leave my dogs in the car in a lot of places up here-not outside a hotel or in a town or anywhere in England by all accounts ;) but they are comfortable and used to being in the car.

Because we have quite a few occasions a year when we stay away at family (who have come to accept over the years that we won’t come without the dogs!) or on holiday somewhere dog friendly, but usually with restrictions like no dogs in carpetted areas/bedrooms, we have had to work on making our collie feel secure away from home.
We got her aged two and she had separation issues having been left rediculous lengths of time and barely seen out of her house. Plus standard neurotic collie tendencies. We went to a holiday rental a few months after getting her and she was meant to sleep in utility room or kitchen (she sleeps downstairs at home but it took two weeks to transition from our room to downstairs when we first got her as she howled and pooed with stress) but we ended up sneaking her into our room (luckily the only downstairs bedroom) but in a crate. She has become accustomed to the crate being a safe constant when on holiday and now happily settles in it for the night (we have just been to my mums and her downstairs is open plan with cream sofas they would sneak on at night if not crated!) we never use it at home. Now if anything if she sees it go in the boot she knows we are going on an adventure!

But as others have said, if this isn’t a regular just sleep downstairs with them. Families can be complicated! But you and your dog have survived!!!

Oh I feel for you and the dog...he must be so unsettled. We went to a good friends for 2 nights a while ago for a wedding, she said does we’re welcome, she had an old lab.. when we got there we found she expected the dog to go in the utility/ garage with her dog..it was cold in there, concreat floor, no heat. Or light.. we politely declined and booked into a travelodge who allowed dogs, my dogs I am afraid sleep in beds in the bedroom with me. Will always check now where dogs are allowed, and if not happy will decline
