Is anyone else finding the winter really hard?!

I felt like this earlier this winter, Im currently got GCSE's, 2/3 horses to muck out etc before school and after school. But what I do, to encourage myself to ride, is watch horsey programs and just think of the good it'll do both me and my horse. We dont even have a school, only hilly bridleways, so im often out in the dark. What i've also found is having much earlier nights than usual, helps me get up in the morning..
Good Luck, and dont let it get you down, we're all in the same position

I have to admit I have been struggling - but thats probably got a lot to do with being 30 weeks pregnant. Plus I am cheesed off having had 3 yard break ins with one attempted one this autumn - which means we have been cleaned out - not even stable doors ! So I cant bring the youngsters in even if I wanted to - so they def have a winter of slumming it in the field I'm afraid.

Its only 2 weeks until the shortest day of the year - and then the days start gettign longer again!! Obviously that doesn;t take the wet and cold away but it definately helps!

I'm sure lots of people feel like you - its a huge shock in your first winter of having a horse in terms of how rubbish it is!! I make myself feel better by reminding myself that if I didnt have a horse i'd be sat inside eating biscuits instead and I;d probably be 10 stone heavier!

Do't beat yourself up about schooling if u don;t feel like it - give yourself and your horsey the winter off ... just go for lovely long hacks at weekends until the nights get shorter again!

You can always hire a box / trailer for a special day out say once every 6 or 8 weeks to give yourself something to look forward to.

Like other folks I am finding this winter a drag, my fields are like bogs, I am sick of the damp and wet weather. I thoroughly enjoyed last year when we had freezing temps, the ground stayed well and then we had snow and loads of it. I preferred last winter to this one. Almost two months of rain and grey skies doesn't lift the spirits!

Chin up, it won't be long and Spring will be on the way.

Think the rain and mud is getting lots of us down. We need some nice crisp dry days and no rain for a little while now! I've given up worrying about riding, the weather has been pants.

Shortest day on 21st December so it's all going to be getting lots better after that... We hope.

Yes I am and I'm really spoilt because my horses are on full livery in winter on weekdays, but then i get frustrated because every weekend its wet, muddy, my horse is a bloody loon because, due to the weather. my YO can't do much with her in the week even though she is turned out daily she is the sort of horse that needs to be in work! so i try to ride her and she hoolies, daughters pony is hairy and need to get him fit for Pony Club....but just think of those gorgeous endless summer evenings when you can ride for hours, see the sunset and it makes it all worthwhile!

I too am struggling and exhausted, but I put it down to moving the horses from my own field to DIY livery and having to stable them over night which obviously means mucking out two stables every morning.

I know I will be ok once I get into a routine and once I get a bit fitter, but until then I am not enjoying it.

Saying that, once the horses are tucked up in bed and all the work is done I am happy to stay down there and keep them company

yes, it's just been rain, rain and more rain here! i am fed up with the wet weather, we had one morning this week that was cold, frosty but dry and bright which i loved!!!

count yourself lucky that you only work 9-5, i (and i know there are others on here that work longer days than me) work 7.30-5.

I know the shattered feeling, but nearly at the shortest day, then it can only get better.......

The weather is very weird here this year. This is my second winter as a horse owner and i'm on DIY. At the mo I never know what rug to put on. One night I put her MW stable rug on with no neck the next night I have to put her HW stable rug on. Tonight I really couldnt decide what to put on. Its a bit milder and pouring with rain. So I just put her HW on but folded the neck back. I've been putting on her MW turnout in the day which has a neck. Havent yet pulled out her HW turnout.

Honestly? No, not stuggling. Sure it would be great if if stopped raining. But really enjoying having my horse in, fit and happy. and am enjoying some wonderful riding.

Because I have to be in such a rigorous routine in winter, I find everything much easier to manage.
