Is anyone else on their last horse?

You will do the same as I did, cry a lot. It totally destroyed me to have empty stables, so after the pain eased I started again and I don't suppose it will be any easier next time round, but that is why we love our boys and girls.
 
I am 58 and my horse is 14. If he lasts another 10 years what will I do? I keep wondering if I should get a youngster now to bring on slowly.

My sister bought a new horse last year when she was 69.
 
Ha ha and there was me thinking I was a rarity! I am 50 and backed my baby myself last year. He is currently 4 and have owned him from being a yearling. Hopefully he will be my last and we will grow old together. My first horse is now 26 and retired and I got her as a 4yr old after having only ridden for 2 years! She taught me a lot which hopefully I will be putting into practice with my baby boy. I never dreamed I would own such a lovely horse and am so glad I didn't decide to retire from horses! Will add that I am a complete wuss but have done all his 'firsts' (backing, trotting, cantering, hacking etc.) myself as he has a temperament to die for and hopefully my riding will not let his super paces down ;-)
 
I'm 52 my lad is 10 this year, I bought him as a yearling, backed him with the help of a friend, he is a total stress head! Connemara, I got a native as I thought he would be an easy option, Wrong! As long as he lives to a ripe old age God willing, he will be my last.
 
OP - please don't give up because of how you think you MIGHT feel in future!

It ain't over 'til the fat pony sings (or cob, in Shils' case :p).

As my dear old Dad always said: 'We'll jump off that bridge when we get to it".

Sorry you lost your mum, but she sounds like a great person and that is exactly the attitude I would like at her age.

I am in my very late 30's :D and quite recently bought a 3yr old and dont plan on her being my last!
 
I'm certainly not on my last (only 21) but definitely having a break before getting another... Probably wait until next year and skip the horrible winter.

I think if people are in a position to buy, have the experience and time then go for it :) regardless of their age, it's just a number.
 
I bought a 5 yr old at 38, hoping she would last me until I'm 60 and be my last one.

She will be 15 next month, and has a couple of injuries which I have to manage (she is rideable) and which have meant that I've never been able to do exactly what I wanted to with her.

I am now considering buying another youngster before I'm 50 - just need to work out the finances as it's a while since I've kept two horses. If I do that, it will be a 4 or 5 yr old, so should last me until I'm 70..... :)
