I assume that was the bludgeoning bit? Don't they have knives? Surely slitting it's throat would be quicker? That's how they do it in a lot of remote place where, even if they have guns, they can't possibly waste a bullet on every animal.
people eat different animals across many diffent cultures and if they need to eat horse meat then ok.
But the way they go about killing them is awful. I was sat here in tears when they were strangling her. I think the presenter is very brave indeed. I would have been completely hysterical having to watch that in the flesh.
I find it so strange they love thier horses so much but can go about killing them in that horrific manner.
I think the outcry makes me feel worse, these people are living in relative poverty in really harsh conditions and we are squealing about a horrible 5 mins of a horses life, when the rest was the best wild conditions a horse could wish for.

ya still think she is all wimpery now? brutal way of killing them, dont they have f***ing guns? poor animal knew what was coming. Dont mind killing anything but not like that, gun would have been kinder.

It was just evil, guns would have been kinder, but i suppose that ruins their fun! R.I.P Little furry friends.xxx
that was awful, i was really upset. :shudders:
i didnt watch the multiple blows to the head and stabbing
just the horrid running about with the fear in her eyes and jumping to get away, then running round being strangled making that awful awful noise as she gasped for breath...
surely they could have got it done more effectively than that?!
I agree that the way they kill them is awful and there is much more humane ways of doing it. And yes, i dont see how they can treat their animals with so much respect and care, yet kill them in such a brutal manner.

I dont think they see it as fun.... its a way of life, their life and just for a brief time we had a glimpse of it. You might not like it but its all they know.
Oh for goodness sakes whats the matter with all of you. It real life. These people make a living from this, its what they have to do. They do it with the utmost respect for thier environment and the animals that live there.
No its not nice for the horse but its the safest and quickest way.
You can all hate me if you want but I thought the prog was fascinating and am looking forward to seeing where we are taken next time.

when i saw that there was horse programme on tonight, i was looking forward to it, but i turned off after 15 minutes....and i am so glad i didnt see them kill a pony. I would have been too distressed and upset.
Not seen the programme but interesting posts, and have to agree with you it is their way of life and I guess they, unlike us, only kill what they NEED to eat, rather than mass produced meat on the supermarket shelves that in no way resembles the cow/pig/sheep that it came from!!! Perhaps the queue of animals at the slaughterhouse also know what is coming! Are you all converting to vegetarianism now lol?!
Hmmm i don't think it was the quickest and most humane way but i'm not saying they are wrong. Don't cow's get shot with a gun which doesnt use bullets-we should ship one over. Ha yes i didn't believe the snared wolf died quickly i think he humoured her and us, freezing to death isn't quick or sufferless but they've got to eat, so actually i enjoyed it and will watch it again. I thought she did well and i was impressed with her language skills
I started watching it then realised what it was about, rather than my thinking it was about ponies frolicking around!! Turned onto hospital programme which was too much like my work in A&E!! Better than horsey programme tho!
I agree, it is a way of life, but surely there is another way of doing it, it was they strangling bit that got me the worst actually, as its last moments were awful, it was being chased round by a load of men, being strangled by a rope, however i do appreciate it is there way of life, and they do have to do it, it is just quite shocking!
mmm, someone send them a captive bolt then they could use their knives to slit its throat. captive bolts were banned in this country for horses as inhumane, but gotta be better than the way they do it. i still found it an interesting programme though. these people have to live. The BBC warned it contained distressing scenes but i bet thye still get complaints.
They have no real facility to restrain an animal in the same way that we would here in the UK. Plus getting close enough with a gun to get a true shot through the brain on one of those horses would, IMO, be asking to get injured.

I don't think you paid very much attention to the programme if you think they were having fun. Yes the death wasn't exactly humane but those Horses had a very good life. These people most likely aren't allowed guns. They relied on dogs and trapping to catch the wolves that prey on the Horses (and if the wolves got the Horses the death would be a LOT less humane, they start eating them whilst still alive).
I wonder how many people who got upset at this programme bother to check the sources of all the meat they eat and how the animals were raised and slaughtered. Not many I suspect.
I am certain those Men would be deeply offended by that comment. Unless you live in extremes like that and don't eat meat / wear leather then you really can't imagine what it's like. I found it gruesome yes, but a hell of a lot worse goes on in the world.

No, I suspect a bullet would have been the quickest way - but obviously not the safest.
Sorry that some of our more emotional sentiments annoy you

ditto
how on earth is that frankly diabolical scene humane and quick?!
quick?!sorry i was watching the programme where the horse was running round terrified being strangled to the point of submission with a rope, hit over the head and stabbed.not sure what program you were watching.....
skilled people can quickly put an animal down with much less stress by cutting its throat and keep it alot calmer by covering its eyes etc.
not chasing it through a fence, depriving it of air for long terrified minutes then bashing its head in and stabbing it..
yes they have to eat etc but surely some kind of education for the horses welfare wouldnt go amiss..?
