a Hermaphrodite?

Mine is. And I was just wondering what other people's experiences were whith them?

I've had mine for 7 years and he is a really good boy except in the spring when he becomes a bit of a handlefull and very bossy in the field. But any other time in the year he's very good.

Just really interested to know if there are many out there and what people think of them?

Hi, Yes I have one too! I dont think there are many of them about at all. Mine had both female and male bits (male under the covers as it were) and was gelded and also had a hysterecomy a long time before I got her. So she is really an IT rather than a mare or gelding. But she looks like a she. She gets on with everyone in the field and is a lovely person. Is yours still a full mare/stallion?

I put my hands up and say that in all my years with horses I have never heard of this before....
Would be very interested to know more - how was the diagnosis made, is there any kind of HRT treatment etc. etc.?

It is very, very rare, like there are only about 3 horses in the UK. Its funny that 2 people on the forum have one!

Apparantly as a youngster mine was impossible (but then you would be if you had all the stallion hormones and mare hormones coursing around your body). I believe she was nearly put down until the vet took a blood sample and realised she had very high testosterone. When they looked into it she was genuinely both mare and stallion although looked like a mare from the outside. The only solution with her was a full operation whereby they gelded and gave her a hysterecomy (I think it was all a bit of a muddle in there - non tehnical term!). Her experiences have made her suspicious of people she doesnt know, but I have had her about 7 years now and she trusts me. (As I do her, she hasnt a nasty bone in her body!)

Would love to hear about Galazy23's horse

Well we think mine is one because he is very inbred. (As in his Grandad on one side is his Great Grandad on the other!!). Do you know why yours is?

Mine was bred apparently to take over as the next stallion at the stud, but when he was born he had nipples and a bent penis! (I kid you not! It bends right backwards so he pees all over his back legs! Well, he's found a way not to do that! He stands like a mare.) As a foal apparently they were advised to leave him be as it was unclear as to whether he was infact a he or a she inside. But when he was 3, he still had no testicles and so went to hospital where they did investigative surgery and found them. So he is actually a boy, and has no girly parts inside. They also dod a couple of opps to straighten his willy, but were unsuccessful!! I PROMISE you I'm not making this up!!!

So he is a boy. But gets a bit funny in the spirng and the vets said that it would be his hormones (although with no girly bits inside I don't know how, but anyways!), and last spring he was a TOTAL nightmare cause he got turned out with a foal!! He wouldn't let anyone else near it and got very mareish and a REAL handful! He's otherwise quite laid back!. Does your ever act strangely.

I do know of one other who is the same as mine (as in a boy with nipples!)

Gosh that is really interesting... I knew it happened in other species but did not realise it happens in horses too. In fact, there is a faulty gene in goats which causes them to be a hebe shebe, it is quite comman in fact!
