Is hay situation really this bad?

Ooooh this is just what happened a few years ago - people started panic buying and as a result prices shot right up and didn't then fall again.

Clearly this rain is affecting the hay crop but panic buying is absolutely the worst thing you can all do.

Panic buying of what? There is no hay locally. My farrier said that there was some made in May when it was very hot, but most people would have left it a few weeks longer, as normal and since then there haven't been enough dry days to even consider trying. I have seen a couple fields of baled haylage.

I hope that eventually the rain will stop sufficiently for the ground to dry out sufficiently for machinery to get onto it and even more sunshine to make into hay, but that is in the hands of the gods.

In the 1870s (I think) there were 300 days with rain in one year. Seems like this could be headed in the same direction, only that the first half was unusually dry. Just an average year then.
