Be honest please - I think he is too heavy and plain, would like one to show at a higher level and he struggles......

i really like him, they come in all shapes and sizes don't they!!

Interestingly I'm worrying my D isn't heavy enough! I too want to show at high level and am unsure if mine is typey enough. Sorry not very good advice. I keep an eye out whats winning at the top shows to get an idea. He is in his winter woolies in the pic so looks heavier than would in summer but imho i like him. Does he move well? I presume it riddens you're aiming for? I can only tell you really what I got told (i'm not expert) try a variety of shows under different judges then you'll get a more realistic idea of how well he can do.

this is my boy (as you can see in background much lighter than other in hand D's)

i have 2 D's and one is too heavy and one too light! see pics i just put on the other Welshie thread. the movement is all important though and as mine were bought for dressage, neither have the big knee action.

D's are supposed to be heavy like yours. I'm afraid I think the one above ^^is far too light, although I don't know it's age, maybe it still needs to fill out?

He's lush, a proper old stamp of a cob; he looks like he could work or hunt all day, as he should. Maybe it's the judges who are wrong

if they choose a flashy front toe over a more traditional looking horse, but that's showing, I guess.

I'm sure he would cope very well down here in his native hills with me if you decide to buy something flashier

He's only four. He's growing a bit spordadically atm, he looked a lot chunkier as a stallion:

and now

I know he's fat here (just moved on to new grazing and gorged himself) but you can see he's filling out:

he won't stop maturing for three more years so will end up being more substantial

hollyberry your palo seems to have had several changes, how big is he?

well I'm going to post one of Frank on this thread too as we are having a welshie night!

and he had to shrink not fill out (when I bought him 4 year ago)

he's a touch under 14.2hh at the moment. Yes he has, he was used as a stallion for a year, got a few babies this year. Then sold to the lady I bought him off in about June last year. She gelded him but then didn't really do anything with him, he just sat in a field and was then advertised for sale. I've had him since March this year and he's come on loads, I've backed him and am now riding him away.

yup it does kinda suit him though! but I find getting on v difficult without a mane!

took a year and was easy actually, was all ready for plaiting over, neck covers etc. He was clipped in the march, inc feathers sold, resold to me in the june (having not done much work hence the weight), was fine for showing by the following summer, I wish I had progress pics actually and for the weight. It was very well behaved as I was worried about it having seen thick nests before!

have only just pulled it though (bout a month ago) you can see in the drsg pic in my sig just. mostly because he was getting very hot under it. Prob will let it grow out for winter though as it keeps one side of his neck dry when he is full clipped. I think if I pulled it any shorter it would just stick up, it is very coarse and wiry unlike some.

In his winter woolies it is hard to tell, but thinking back to some of your previous pics he is a bit plain (like you say) however he looks quality a bit short in the neck but in ridden classes with clever trimming that can be disguised.

Obviously my word is not gospel, its just my opinion but I would imagine both you and hollyberry need to be savvy when picking judges to show under. Like hollyberry, my D is a modern lighter D, he is favoured by female judges as he has excellent manners and gives a fab show...with a brilliant medium trot.

Half the skill of showing a less flashy D is in picking the right judge to show under. Watching other classes to see what certain judges like and keep a list of names of those you do well under, then you can be sure to look out for those judges next time.

You don't know till you try so take him out and see how things go...now I'll join in with a picture of my D!!

I always like your cob lilym, a proper traditional welsh cob to me.

My mum lives in mid Wales and so I go with her to the shows when I am down there eg the stallion show at lampeter. One extra trend I have noticed is an increase in cobs who have very little depth in the body (herring gutted my mum calls it) so you have this very sway back combined with little depth. It must be tricky to ride let alone fit a saddle.

Has anyone else noticed that?

I do agree that it seems to be the inhand brigade that mostly go for the extremes but it does worry me that these champion stallions are going to be breeding somewhere and presumably not all the mares are purely for inhand.

I guess this is a long winded way of saying I like the traditional welsh cob

like yours lilym

Personally i think as said, he is a very nice stamp of an old traditional cob imo. I do absolutely love cobs, i really will have to scan in some pics of our old cobs one day soon.
I cannot see his face but it looks like he has a blaze? If he has got a blaze to match those socks i would not say he is plain at all

Trendybraincell yours looks very similar to F

Well I'm stuffed if I know what look is in fashion, but I think all of the horses on this thread are gorgeous! The palomino, I will be interested to see if his legs chunk, as to me he looks very fine boned (but then 2 of the 3 welshies I know are very very chunky so I'm biased).

I don't really follow showing so I'm not really sure what the judges look for in a Sec D these days (so I'm probably not really helpful on this thread

) However I know your boy is GORGEOUS LilyM and instantly identifiable as a Welshy so I would hope he would do well

Have you got a more recent picture? And one from side on? The angle of that one makes his neck look short and thick and his head look small, and the hair is disguising his features. I am no expert in conformation, but would say he is instantly recognisable as his type. How does he move? That seems to be crucial with the Welshies. Some here to compare:

Thanks for your input all, he is plain but i will try to find some better side on pics...I think we'll give the showing a miss as i have yet to find a judge that likes him!! Yet on the other hand my scatty, light of bone sec c should do well under saddle!! Will have to get on and break her in, and keep the D for hacking!!

I think the only thing is his head it is too plain and highland looking for a top d, his body his fine it also goes on movement. Mine had 5th at cheshire county out of 50 that was his best result at Hoys level. What you tend to find at the top is either a, big moving or b, correct moving bay 4 whites and blaze as long as the correct rider is on board. A couple that are doing really well this year are newydd ben hur, floreat dandelion, pentrepiod the judge and then your old favs pennal colon mai, pennal the great sydenham hebe see if you can google them to get pics that will give you an idea
