I know absolutly zero about showing but I just wondered what i could show my TB in apart from ex racing classes. Is he a hack? Also what do i wear and what should he have on? Is he ok in a snaffle or does he need a double?
Also do you think he is a good enough standard to do qualifers etc? He has got clean legs and is very well bred. Thanks. :)

Thank you.

whats his movement like? hacks should be very elegant across the ground.
Has he got good manners - that is paramount in a hack...

He is lovely btw!

Not really sure on showing but I *think* you may be able to get away with putting him into some hack classes- just thinking back to the last showing show I went to and the horses in the hacking classes looked pretty similar to him!

Really just wanted to say what a goregeous boy he is, lucky you!

(i) Hacks
The ideal Show Hack is of thoroughbred type and should be capable of carrying an average adult. The Hack must
be a pleasure to ride and have excellent manners. The Hack should be in self-carriage and be light and soft to ride,
it should also have correct conformation with the emphasis on quality and elegance. The latter stems from a well
set on head and neck combined with a good length of shoulder. The movement should be smooth and graceful
with a true pointing of the toe. To achieve these qualities the Hack must be extremely well schooled.
Hacks can be:
Small Hack – mare or gelding 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding 154cms.
Large Hack – mare or gelding 4 years old and over, exceeding 154cms, but not exceeding 160cms.

The Association recommends that shows should provide two classes for Hacks, but if it is only possible to hold
one class the full range of height should be covered and the wording should be as follows:

Open Hack – mare or gelding 4 years old and over, exceeding 148cms, but not exceeding160cms.

For Novice, Ladies Side Saddle, Young Rider, Restricted, Amateur and Amateur Owner Rider classes
see Rule 7 (Definitions and Classifications).

Hack judging – to be judged on type, ride, manners and conformation. It is recommended that judges use the
following percentages when judging Hacks: Ride 40%, Conformation 40%, Individual Show 20%.

The compulsory individual show should not exceed 1½ minutes and should include walk, trot, canter, rein
back, stand still and obedience to the leg. Judges should penalise lack of manners and should ignore
uncalled for movements performed in order to try and impress the judge(s) i.e. flying changes, high school,
etc.

Championships – only when judging Hack Championships may the judge(s) take into account more advanced
movements such as flying changes, when they are performed correctly.

so in short yes he could be

Thank you everyone for all the lovely comments and advice. :)

Will give riding horse classes a go.. i havn't got brown tack though. Is that a major problem?!! Or could i just give it ago first in his black tack and if we both like it then invest in the correct colour!

Black is incorrect so brown ideally, though as it is costly I'd say see if you both like it first and then go from there :)

Give some local level stuff a go and get the 'feel' for the showing world that way. It's not to everyone's taste tbh. It really doesn't matter if oyu're wearing black tack for local level and if you're comfortable in a snaffle and he goes well in it then stick with that and aim for the 'novice' classes.

Then you could progress onwards to a double bridle when you and him feel ready for it. Hack/riding horse classes must have manners to burn and even in local classes, the judge may want to ride him.

If you're progressing well then that is the time to start thinking about brown tack.

He really is a super horse and will do really well. I could not really see by the photo how fine he is,but I'm sure you'd do well in hack classes. If he gains any more condition,he may well go up to the riding horse section.

Hope this helps.

I would go for riding horse, you would be supprised how fine hacks are, also they are very well produced. He is lovely but unless he moves like a daisy cutter you have much more chance in riding horse classes. There are very few true hacks out there and you will be supprised how light and quality they are.
